Anounced retirement today at just 29 aftwr a season in mediocre team Spartak Moscow. I would have taken him on a free. Still had pace and played well fpr Fulham, it wasn't his fault that they went down. Guy scored 6 from winger position in that season. And his capabilities are much greater. Better than many wingers in the PL. I think no one in Emgland offered him a contract and he just wouldn't take the Bundesliga average salary anymore. Kind of like that Pablo Osvaldo fellow who retired to become a rock star a few years back.

Didn’t Osvaldo hit a team mate at Southampton?

Yeah, Osvaldo wasn't that good. But Schurrle had no extra weight put on,meaning he could still run like a deer His goalscoring record and assists for the national team, Leverkusen, Chelsea, Wolfsburg and even Borussia Dortmund speaks for itself.

I recall Schurrle as a player who had the ability to make high intensity runs time and time again. Edited by Willo (18 Jul 2020 9.21am)

Fulham's worries were defensive rather than offensive last year. But Schurrle is a player who also does his own part defensively. If a player like Schurrle retires after a mediocre season in Russia (in which he still scored and assisted 6) and one good individual season with Fulham, but bad because of club relegation, then what should players like Meyer, Benteke or others do after years of not playing well?? If Schurrle was given Meyer's salary (or even much less, as Meyer is rumored to be at over 100.000 a week) I'm sure he could do more in the PL and he wouldn't retire this summer. This is just a wishful thinking point I'm making, but someone at the club should be in charge of those things. Edited by mattteo (18 Jul 2020 11.40am)

Could do a job but the longer he is out of the game, the more difficult it will be to get to required fitness levels, although with the German mentality could well acheive it! We were linked with him before and he's not that old for us. We should make an offer to him now - before he puts his feet up. Pretty sure he would come to London as he will have connections here from the past.

If he has retired because a club like Spartak no longer motivates him then why would playing for Palace be any different? It's not as though we are setting the world alight.
