Roy has been a miracle worker, as few men would have retained his combination of faith, hope and love for the game and the team, when things were so terribly desperate in the bleak midwinter...

If I were Parish, I would reward Roy immensely and ask him to name a successor who will serve as a well-compensated assistant manager for as long as it's necessary to make the transition -- from a few months to a few seasons. Go ahead and throw in a bonus, Steve, to give Roy a payout for every year that Roy's hand-picked successor remains at Palace.

Well Roy, when you get to see your son in Florida, stick a large slice of humble pie on the Barbie for me...what you have done for our club is truly amazing...you really are one of our own.

I didn’t want Roy, but given his long and illustrious career there must have been scores of fans who said no to his tenure at many clubs for whatever reason. I think it’s par for the course.

(I feel compelled to ask why you’d put a pie on a barbie, or are talking about the doll?)

I would certainly keep him, no reason you can't have more than one assistant manager

I don't think that would work, you can't have two assistant's with the same authority, what if they don't agree.
How about an assistant to the assistant manager?

IMO, it is not money, trophies or ambition that keep Roy in the game, its his love of football. The buzz that a manager gets kept Sir Alex and Arsene in jobs (some would say well past their sell by date) however they just find it impossible to give up.

I think Roy feels exactly the same and if he goes, it won't be because Parish hasn't signed the right players or he feels that he should be at a different club, it will probably be because he doesn't want to manage any longer.

If he still holds onto the joy of management I can see him staying for maybe a couple of years. Let's hope his and his family's health holds up as I am sure that will have an impact on his decision.

Or an Assistant to the Deputy Assistant.

Defo want Roy to stay. Let him have the team he wants and give him a decent budget. I reckon £30/40m plus any sales and I honestly believe we would finish top 8/9.
I don't like the idea of succession though. Once Roy goes we should get another manager in. Assistants are too close to the players to be effective at making the tough decisions.

This is very true, not many assistants become good managers with the same team.

It worked well enough for Liverpool for a number of years

That is right when BS left there was nothing and look what happened.

Has to be the right person, some time under the guise of RH for example would be great for a new manager.

FdB for example would have benefited with a couple of months to get used to the PL setup then maybe things would have worked out better.

After the amazing job he’s done I’m sure the jobs his next year if he wants it. What may put him off could be the boards reluctance to spend last window and give him much help. And if for example the new stand costs escalated might he be put in a similar position again.
