The last thing broadcasters in a free press should ever be is patriotic. The idea of a fourth estate has been massively undermined by the rise of mass private ownership.

Let alone an expectation of 'loyality to the nation' which is a phrase that typically means to the government.

There is nothing wrong with being a patriot, until you start to ignore the truth (and basic human values), because it goes against your belief in nation / which always becomes 'the administration'.

Its like no ones ever read Captain America comics which back as far as the 50s were hitting that point that being a patriot means standing against your country, far more than standing by it.

Only very stupid people believe that the media should be patriotic.

Totally in agreement with you. As for your last sentence: yep, stupid people like Andrea Leadsom....

Only very stupid people believe that the media shouldn't be patriotic. Only very stupid people believe that the media should be this or that....or speak with one voice.

The point is that only very stupid people believe that their perspective is the only truth and not a perspective. Even statistical facts rely upon interpretation.

I have no problem with news being patriotic or not being patriotic. Every perceptive should be open to criticism and the marketplace of ideas.

Every non violent group deserves its representation and voice. Its ideas free to be spoken and challenged.

However where we probably disagree is in how important it is to protect the state. Freedoms aren't automatic.

The moment people use the term 'liberal left' bias, they're showing their agenda. They basically mean its not appealing to people who are right wing, and oppose the concepts of equality.

The kind of people who complain about having a Lesbian character on Dr Who, on the basis that its 'pandering to political correctness', rather than the show being poorly written.

I disagree with everything you typed.....except for how badly written Dr Who is.....I've never understood why that show gets so much praise....well scrub that...I do understand why...it's 'liberal left' bias.

And rightly so, its BBC product.

However, its the 21st century, there are all kinds of places online you can download product, and stream it to a TV. A large screen TV is just a monitor, if you don't connect it up.

This argument is such nonsense. To watch TV without the hassle of f'ing about with downloads and other techie b**ll**ks you have to have a TV licence. If you want to watch BBC programs whether, live, catch-up or download YOU HAVE TO HAVE A TV LICENCE. To argue otherwise is like says you don't need to pay water rates, you could dig a well.

Quite right I have to sign in now to say I have a licence before using iplayer and I think there is a tightening up generally.

Andrew Marr is never going to ask a politician the question you are dying to know the answer to, because everybody is different.

My views have become leftish and I despair of the beeb just as conservatives do but its no big deal.

That is not true.

It has nothing to do with equality and everything to do with misrepresentation. I like the lesbian character in Dr Who, I actually think she is quite good. The stories generally are bloody awful.
The problem with Dr Who is it's obsession with including as many non white faces as it can manage to a level which is way above the national demographic. For every 30 characters there should be about one black person and 2 Asians. I know in London it is more but London is not representative of Britain.

Broadcasting went down hill ever since they ended that show that had women playing darts with their jugs out.

To watch Sky I have to pay for Sky. That's kind of how capitalism works
