Just a couple of points:

The Ajax first eleven when he was manager had either 5 or 6 non-dutch players depending on formation & they included a German, a Serb, a South African & one or two Danes. The bench, however, was mainly Dutch kids from the academy.

In each season he was in charge, Ajax had the best defensive record in the league but were not top scorers - not an indicator of "all-out attack". Reading some write ups, especially early in his managerial career, it seems he is as big a fan of the clean sheet as Sam was.

In Ajax's big results (Barca in Champions League etc) the reports all point to one great strength which is defending and attacking as a team. Sam had us working toward this already so if FdB can build on that, add some control & a touch of flair & we could realistically establish ourselves as an EPL team.

We can but hope.

That's very reassuring about his defensive record! I also don't agree with those who say that Sam's short reign was a retrograde step into dull defensiveness, and saw what you describbe, a move towards cohesive attacking play backed by solid defence. It was a bit shaky at times, but I think it was correct.

As you say, we need to build on that with some extra flair, then we should achieve our goal of being an ESTABLISHED premiership team, where we shouldn't have to worry about relegation every bleeding season! European football and all that 'icing' may happen in the coming years, but I won't cry or moan on HOL if it doesn't. Let's just concentrate on mid-table security for a while... oh, and of course "a run in the cups"...

we ain't Ajax, Dutch, part of Cruyff's legacy or anything like it
half the team can't pass intelligently (some not at all) or get into strategic positions, and can't be taught.
This is why pragmatism (Pulis, Allardyce) worked for us - play to the team's strengths (fast clever wingers and strong CF), eliminate the grosser weaknesses (ie learn how to bleedin' defend!)
Pragmatism only works for so long. Parish wants the team to play entertaining football, I believe that has allways been his approach unfortunately that is extremely hard to achieve in the Premier League as was seen last season in how many teams were in danger of relegation last April. It could have been anyone from 10 teams.
Pardew tried and failed maybe Frank de Boere can bring it off. The current squad with a couple of replacements is capable of changing style.
Benteke will score 15-20 goals a season and Cabaye is the brains in midfield. Zaha creates problems for defenders just needs to accept that he is not going to get the protection he deserves from the referees and go into a stropp.
A good central defender and right back and we have the nucleus of a good team.
I think this is a very promising appointment. Hoping that he can have an influence on the junior players and get them playing good football, that filters all the way down not just the first team.
I am feeling very positive for the future. Allerdyce done the job he was brought in to do but for me was an expensive backward step that paid dividends.

By pragmatism I don't mean playing the same dull defensive game week in week out, but playing to your strenghths and the opponents weaknesses, and that's surely what all good teams do strategically? Doesn't have to be dull, but not lunacy either...

Agreed we need a stronger defence (RB/CB) and then we can build confidently, but midfield also looks unbalanced or overrun - maybe part of the same problem.

Cannot agree Allardyce was a backward step. I was surprised haw good the team looked after a couple of months' work - both defence AND attack. And surely he was a good price to pay for keeping us in the premiership? relegation would have set us back years.

btw I'm also feeling very positive now having heard him speaking, and I'm sure he'll build us into a consistently good team based on a solid defence!

I think we will see a young and experienced team go to Asia, I really felt he was not impressed with those fixtures in his interview and will not take it as serious and some may hope.

If we do get majority possession it will be interesting to see if Wilf can wriggle his way through against well set defences. Actually it'll be interesting to see if he can help a team to play keep ball. I believe he will be a great success this coming season but he'll have to adapt and add some strings to his bow.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

Ginge, have you been 'away' for a few days, perhaps with Mrs Ginge? Haven't seen any posts from you for a while ( but I don't read every topic, I grant you).

My friend from Ajax has explained his style of football to me as follows (all spelling mistakes etc are hers):

"He is 5x champion, so you can't go wrong. Although he did that with 'dutch football' old style.. Not putting allot of pressure on the opossing team and in no particular hurry to get the ball in front of the goal.
Individual qualities did come through but it was a skeep fest to watch . aspecially in the end. Im interested to see. What he can do out of the Ajax mold and if fysical and fast paced football inspires him.. He at least said so in dutch interviews. If his play style is the one used at Ajax then I wonder if it will fit the PL. Bit if he coyld get better players the at Ajax at that time, why not.. Core of his game is possesion and movement in front with three players."

When I made a joke about the words "movement" and "Benteke" not being a good fit, her reply was:

"Haha.. He uses the forward to get midfielders in scoring position, his forwards hardly scored more then 15 goals in a winning team."

Benteke's movement in the box for a cross or set piece is a class above say Wickham's - especially against zonal marking, e.g. his goal against Liverpool when he pounced after Loveren f***ed up at the corner.

Against a well marshalled defense, a game-breaker like Wilf is exactly what you need. Just think back to England's recent fixtures, where the wide players did nothing except recycle the ball via the supporting full back. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

What was that about them maybe regretting letting Wilf declare for Ivory Coast? But then Southgate would probably have told him to do the same thing; after all you would think that Oxtail Chamberpot of all people would know better.

Pathetic.

A good analysis of de Boer's approach.

He thinks 'Jordan Mutch could be a big winner under de Boer.' Pfffft.

Jonny Williams as well. And Puncheon, who I think is going to be out as soon as other priorities are addressed so we can buy a number 10.

He also thinks Ward could be moved into central midfield. Maybe as a stand in with a bad injury list but I can't see who he'd nudge out of the team.

Good summary piece on play. Not as good as the one at the start of this de Boer philosophy thread though. But when it gets to possible players promoted it gets a little difficult to believe. Frank is going to quickly realise he has 15 prem level players, a handful of whom are uncomfortable on the ball when the opposition wants it off you. I'll be amazed if he starts finding hidden qualities or turns Jordan Mutch into a confident playmaker in this league. On the other hand if Burnley let us have the ball to look pretty at home and just wait to pounce then he might look good for 2 months with no end product.

It's pretty obvious. Frank is going to have to find a handful of players, probably 10 over 3 windows that can evolve us into his vision. To begin with they're going to need to cost ideally under £10mil. Not easy and I'd be moving people on the periphery out to afford more, not hanging onto them for longer.
