Also, on that basis Padovano goes to the top of my list. But Jose Campana belongs there too. I crowed to a load of people that we'd signed him and all he ever did at Palace was send a few text messages.

There was loads of hype. He was serie A's top goal scorer a few seasons before he joined us.

No he wasn't; never even near. He was never Juventus' number 1 striker and had never been a big team player, or super prolific, in Italy. He was, however, someone who'd been in the Juve team which had won the European Cup only a couple of years before and playing regularly for Juventus so there was definitely expectation & disappointment when we realised that they'd had stitched us up with an injured dud...soon followed by their own disappointment when they realised that we had stitched them up in paying for said injured dud!

I actually thought Fan did OK in a poor palace team, he certainly stayed around. Was more consistant that the other one Sun Jai or whatever his name was

Surely you don't mean Palace legend Fan Zhiyi? Arguably the best Chinese player ever to play for the club?
About 10 years ago in Fuerteventura the boss of a Chinese restaurant same over to buy us free drinks because my son had his Place shirt on - he couldnt speak any English other than say "Fan Zhiyi very good player!"

Both chinese players were good for us. Sun rightfully went on to be a good Premier League player for Man City, he was quality.

Fan not quite as good but still played a big part in a struggling team.

Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.

Aruna Dindane - remember we signed him , a couple of years before getting him he impressed on loan at Pompey. Could wait for him to play at the time. Failed to make a single appearance.

Don't forget that because of the signing of these two players, I believe the most watched football match in history (including television) is estimated to be a Crystal Palace League Cup defeat to Bury shortly after we had signed these two, because a huge number of Chinese people tuned in to see their first players to star for an English Premier League team.

Someone will tell me all of that trivia is wrong! I am usually wrong!

You appear to be correct.

Venables spotted Fan during England's tour of China in 1996 and then-Palace coach Ted Buxton recommended Sun from his time working with the Chinese national side.

More than 100 million people in China watched Fan's debut on TV and both players adapted to life in London with ease and were a success on the pitch too.

Fan - an all-action midfielder and centre half - impressed with his dedication and commitment over 102 games, scoring six times, and was named 2001 Player of the Year.

Full-back Sun also sparkled for the Eagles in just 25 matches, and after a stint back in the Far East, returned to the UK to play for Manchester City in the Premier League.

It is. We have so many odd records.

The last team to field eleven English players in an FA Cup final, for example. But I digress and I think this may have been done on another thread.

There are alot of players being mentioned on here who were awful, but some of them were never hyped up anyway (and I disagree about the Chinese players, I thought they were very decent).

As mentioned previously, I think the one player who arrived with such expectation (given the amount of money we had to pay and chasing it required) was Gareth Taylor.

I don't think Marco Gabbiadini deserves the tag. I once saw an interview with Steve Coppell who said that Gabbiadini never got a fair chance because shortly after his arrival, John Salako sustained his major injury. Had he played with Gabbiadini, then he may have more successful.
