Because people think that Aid is free, which it isn't. I do get tired of explaining that aid is effectively tied to projects and undertakings. For example, the UK gave 15m in aid to Turkey as part of a clean water program, which results in Thames Water UK getting a number of contracts relating to water which was worth around 5bn to Thames Water UK over a 15 year contract. That's generally how aid works. We give defence aid to say Saudi Arabia, and then they place orders with British Defence firms for kit. Then it's not "aid" at all then. I don't go into Waitrose and say I want a rack of ribs in return for aid.

Also, does someone reconcile that we get a like for like return on our aid from Ethiopia, pakistan, India, Sudan, Afghanistan etc? You might tell me yes, just saying you've piqued my interest.

Bring back capital punishment. The UK can't do this, without massive legal reform following its undertakings under a number of rights act the UK signed up to. Originally posted by jimruss
Reduce foreign aid and redistribute to the NHS. Foreign Aid is the life blood of UK international trade. Around 75% of aid is better seen as bribes. We don't actually give money away, its all tied to specific programs and incentives, most of which result in UK preferences.

Sudan, no. But given that Afghanistan, Ethiopia, pakistan and India have had huge military spending and equipment, and the UK's largest export is military defence, I'd be inclined to say yes. That new Afghan army was very expensive. They literally had nothing, not even the uniforms. These days, AKs are as likely to come from the UK as from their manufacturer.

Even when its not tied, its generally more about keeping a friendly leadership popular (i.e. ensuring they don't end up overthrown and say nationalising their oil industry).

Its more about slipping a tenner to the Waitrose manager so that he always sells you a rack of ribs at the price you want each time you go in, and that your brother gets the contract to replace the freezer units supporting his brothers electrical company.

Anyway, my manifesto was just to ban bras. I'm sticking with it. I'll let someone else sort out the finances.

But they're using "aid" money to pay for it, so it's a zero sum game. Unless it's aid money they got from some other country, that is.
