You have got it wrong. Southgate was responding to critism by Steve Parish. He had to come back with what went on and the way i read it i make Southgate right. Wilf was not 100% committed to England and Southgate could not put him in his squad for that reason. That is what i want to hear from the England manager. Too many players have been capped that dont really show the passion for their country that they put on for their clubs and its part of the reason we dont do very well in tournaments.

Sorry mate, I have to disagree, I think all Parish said was that Zaha should be scoring those goals in an England shirt (could be wrong but that's all I saw). Southgate has taken offence to that because its true - to make his defence what seems to be a personal attack on Wilf is wrong. He could have easily just said that Parish is entitled to his own opinion etc He did not have to question his commitment to England. It's fairly well known that Southgate and Wilf don't get on, I've no doubt that Wilf's exclusion is as much down to that as anything else. Do you think he has sat down every player that he has selected so far and grilled them on their commitment to the cause?

Perhaps it hasn't been necessary in other cases as others don't drop hints that they will switch their allegiance to another country if they aren't picked

Wilf said at a very very young age that he hadn't decided which country he wanted to represent.

If I emigrated and my kid was good enough to play international sport, I'd want them to represent England, not their new home, and would try to keep them connected to England.

I'd speculate that, coming from a fairly poor country, the Zaha family might feel honor bound for him to represent that country.

Talk of switching allegiance is the wrong place to start the conversation. He wasn't decided. Then he was.

Yeah spot on. I can vouch for this. My son was born in Sydney (to English parents)but no way will he be playing for Australia. He's going to captain Palace and England instead.

I'm with you. Southgate's statement is inflammatory and, by some measures, racist.

Hope it inspires Wilf to go on a tear up through the rest of the season and shove those words down Southgate's throat.

Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune)

Southgate regret

Gareth had opportunity to pick him in friendlies. In a move seemingly designed only to insult Wilf and drive him to play for Les Elephants, Southgate picked Townsend over him when Andros was clearly not better.

There were a lot of snubs by multiple managers along the way, but Southgate had history with Wilf - from the U21s - yet chose to snub him in perhaps the manner more cruel than any of any of his predecessors. He nailed England's coffin tightly shut.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

Southgate had opportunites to pick zaha and didn't. He came out after Zaha had picked ivory coast and said he will try and get him to play for enlgand- too little too late, he was just saying this to make it look like he made an effort. He was at the burnley game where zaha was immense and still chose not to pick him.

Now zaha has picked up form and is genuinley a better option than townsend lingard or redmond he is deflecting attention from himself and blaming the player for not being comitted to england.

Southgate would never of picked Zaha, even if he had declared for England, and i think it stems from the under 21s when zaha and henderson had an arguement when southgate was manager. He would see it as disharmanous to the camp. Id rather zaha in my team over henderson any day.

I know a bloke whose dad owns a strip club (weird, but true). When two strippers have a falling out - a regular occurrence as you'd imagine - he has to fire one of them. The choice is simple: you fire the uglier one.

Surely it has to be arse covering. He had every opportunity to speak to Zaha when in temporary charge, let alone put him in the squad, but chose not too.

He then 'bothers' to make contact after his full time appointment by which time Zaha had already made his mind up and, if reports were correct, had told the ICFA. The fact that he stood by his decision despite the papers not having been signed speaks volumes for his integrity IMO - something St Ryan was lauded for when he chose Wales over England back in the day.

I thought the Parish tweet was aimed at the establishment, not Southgate, as he'd been critical of previous national managers too.

Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five!
