Once more.

Where do you draw the line?

In any case people are getting fatter and fatter.

Which is the greater problem?

A few people who have eating disorders or a large proportion of the population getting morbidly obese?

How is it wrong to show images of people who are healthy and attractive? Not all of us can look like the perceived ideal but it is beneficial for the vast majority to have a bit of vanity and at least try to achieve it. Those I know personally who have no vanity and are "happy" with themselves are very over weight and have health problems.

A problem with many debates on here and elsewhere is that generally the ones who shout loudest against an idea are those that have never had to face the issue nor know someone who has. This often leads to people arguing a point despite their ignorance of it.

Where to draw the line? Ban all advertising on the tube!

Why are people getting fatter? Many reasons. Eating s*** cheap ready meals as they don't have time to cook or don't know how to cook. Comfort eating. Sedentary lifestyle. Over consumption of soft drinks are the first things that spring to mind.

I don't recall there being many obese people when I was growing up.

You're pathetic. You brought up the comparison but don't back it up with anything but 'google it'.

The other campaign cost less than 20K. Still want to argue which was more successful?

Ad hominen starter. Good work.
The Google it remark was in response to a similar one you came back at me with this week, so a tad hypocritical to call me out on it.

Some people are richer, better looking and more charismatic than you, if you can't handle that then you're not really going to be able to deal with the majority of life's little kicks in the balls.

Seems to be quite a right-wing rhetoric, which people find unpalatable. I'd say people need to toughen up while others will do all they can to stop anything which could have consequences for the victim in 1 in a million cases.

How do we halt the increase in allergies which result from removing all possible allergens from kids diets, without risk of death? This is for scientists, not politicians.

You raise an important aspect of all this but not quite how you hoped.

The very last people on Earth who should be making decisions on policy are those who are emotionally involved. It complete skews their attitude and makes them biased.
In my 52 years I have known a handful of people with obvious eating disorders and they are without doubt very troubled souls. I can say in all honesty that I doubt that one of them had their condition purely because of advertising. There troubles were much deeper and closer to home.
Making these knee jerk, token policy decisions are no more than political muscle flexing and I think deep down, you know that.

Some good points. However body image issues lead to other problems such as anxiety / depression.
Agree with your emotional bias in policy making point. However it's still important to have research / evidence to inform policy.
But this is a long way from internet discussions where people act like experts on something they know little about.
I hope that I try and get some background info or use personal experience before entering any fray. (Now I fancy a steak and kidney pie - fray bentos - pies in tins that you cook in boiling water. Can you still get them?)

In fact it's number one!

Please find said remark? That's wishy washy.

In an opinion piece. Please tell me it's value for money, or it's success pound for pound.

Please also explain why the person in that advert is not 'normal' in your opinion but they are in the Dove advert?

I think my comments need more elaboration. I'm not suggesting anyone is purposefully offensive towards a person or people by the way. There is insighting hatred and maliciousness which I'm not about to condone (not sure what kind of nutter would) and then there is sheltering people from ever hearing anything that challenges them in any way at all.

1. Can't find figures for value for money or pound for pound. However Dove, as a result of the ads is one of the biggest and most successful of Unilevers brands.
I actually think you are being deliberately obtuse rather than saying fair enough nick, you may be right.

2. What is normal? If the woman in the picture is normal or for the sake of argument, average sized, then how come obesity is so prevalent?

If you can find any information about the tube advert being more successful than one that has taken Dove to be one of the world's top soap / cleansing brands I'd love to see it.

Dove was successful before that campaign. It used fit, naked women to achieve it's market position. IIRC it was even one of the few TV adverts to have shown actual nudity.

You used the phrase 'normal' so you must have a definition of it? That obesity is prevalent it doesn't make that the norm, or that it should become to be seen as the norm.

I told you of it's success, now don't be lazy again. Back up your assertion with some facts and figures.

I notice you've declined to find the reply you accused me of also. Funny that.
