Sadly i know all too well what Rio is going through, 16 months ago my two children and i lost my wife (though not to cancer). While i cannot understand why any man would cheat on someone he loves the fact is she stayed and they worked through it - does that mean he wont feel any grief, trust me he will. Nothing prepares you for this, i have lost friends and older family members but the loss of my wife was devastating. The children are at a similar age to Rio's and it has hit then harder than you can imagine. Regardless of what you feel for the man (cant say im a fan of his) respect that whether you think he did or didnt love her, he is hurting if not for the loss of his wife but for the pain of his children.

I feel sorry for her and her kids, but him, I have trouble giving a s**t about. So you have no compassion for a man who has lost his wife and mother of his young children. What a wonderful human being you must be. Not this man, no, others yes. But then I don't profess to be a wonderful person, are you? Until a week ago, everyone regarded him as a c**t, now that his wife is dead, he's special Everyone dies, most of the time people don't give a s**t. When you're famous, everyone cares and cries and bemoans the unfairness of it all. Sham sympathy, for a man reviled by most on here at some point, absolved because his wife suffered. F**k him. I feel sorry for the kids, her parents etc, but not for that wannbe peckham gangster hanger on, with rapist mates, who was lucky to avoid being another Marlon King. Have to agree with you Jamie, Given his past, how the hell he ramained in the media and acted as a role model baffled me. Sad for his children and her family but feel no sadness for him. I take it you, Kermit and Jamie feel the same way about Martin Luther King then? Nah, I rated King as a great full back.

Oh no mans wife has died, absolve him of all things, raise him up atoned to the heavens. Just because someone you love or know dies, doesn't mean you not a c**t or that everyone feels the same way. I was touched by the United crowd chant, and by the QPR message because it had meaning. But lets face it, he's Marlon King with a good lawyer.

My mum is dying of cancer but it doesn't absolve me of my sins or failings - just that life sucks, people die and seeing peoples faux sympathy and grief for people just because their famous, makes me sick. Would there be the same level of care or grief if it wasn't Rio Ferdinand; of course not. No one gaves a s**t when its someone from the lower leagues or ordinary walks of life, you just have to get on with it. But if your famous, you deserve national sympathy and faux outpourings, as if your plight is special, and you're absolved and redeemed in the eyes of men. How by posting on a football forum, about a man you'd have been slagging off a couple of weeks ago I suspect. The famous die, and its a tragedy, the normal people die and that's life.

When 'jamie' get's tired i'll gladly take a turn on the shovel. The problem I have with this thread is the title. It should have read ''Rebecca Ellison'', not ''Rio Ferdinands wife''! My thoughts are with her children, family and friends x

I am just adding some comments, not because I feel any particular liking for Rio, but because of some of the ignorant postings from people who obviously have no emotional intelligence.

Well written Tom. I guess sometimes we get carried away and forget that our words will have zero effect on people like Ferdinand. But there are many on here for whom loosely typed words will add an extra barb to pain they are feeling. To you and others in your situation I am sure we all have the deepest sympathy. Thoughtless but not heartless.
