That's a shame, I was about to respond to your post!

Ah well, up to you to delete it. I wasn't offended by it though

Sorry chap- I realised I was ranting and was looking a bit of a dick.

I agree with you but I think I got there a different way (and certainly more long winded) to how you did!

Not in my eyes you weren't pal. Just having a good old debate which is what these boards are for! No hard feelings ever though - it's not worth that much. We're all Palace after all

It's great you can laugh it off Willo but for people who have suffered genuine discrimination and/or racism it's not always a laughing matter.

Japanese people think "Jap" is racist .

Do they ? For what reason ? To my mind "Jap" is just a shortened form of Japanese. Enlighten me, is there some deep-seated historical or other reason why "Jap" is considered racist ?

[Link]

In the United States, the word 'Jap' was sometimes used as a contraction of 'Japanese' before WWII. It wasn't considered derogatory.

That's why willo didn't know it was derogatory. His cultural awareness was halted at the turn of the 20th century

To back Willo up here somewhat. Jap is not considered racist, and if it is there is an awful lot of companies breaking the law if you google search for "jap" and then parts or cars etc.

I believe Nips was the offensive terms, which is an abbreviation of the word they use for Japan.

If you read the link IanJ posted you'll find it is:

Q: Is the word Jap considered derogatory?

Yes, this phrase is widely considered a racial slur.

Much of the English speaking world and the Japanese themselves consider this to be a derogatory term. If you use this word to describe Japanese people or culture — you are likely to offend.

That's one person's opinion as far as I can see, but i'm sure there's others that share the opinion. Do you think there would be multiple companies operating as "Jap" something if it was offensive, no matter the context?

It's obviously more than one person's opinion, as you say. As for the companies, I don't know, but if I was in their shoes I'd choose another name for my business because in many people's eyes it is considered as derogatory.

Like the recent case with Top Gear....who here honestly knew Slope was supposed to be a derogatory comment for an Asian person?

I didn't know that either, but the Top Gear presenters did (that's why they used it - to generate more publicity for themselves) and now I do know I won't use it (not that I did anyway, but you get what I mean).

I guess thats my problem with some of this- being branded such and such when one might be oblivious to its meaning.

In Whelans case I believe he has been very naive, but I dont think he intended to offend.

Really he should have just maintained a dignified silence and let the results on the pitch do the talking.

I think Whelan is old-fashioned and ignorant but probably not a racist. Like you however, I think he was extremely foolish to say what he did instead of just saying "Mackay made a mistake, he's apologised and now we move on".

Instead he's given the story more legs than a caterpillar and ensured it's stayed on the back (and front) pages than it would've done if he'd just kept schtum about the whole thing.

I agree. he's added to what Mackay said. He does say he was mis-quoted but why say anything, As you say all he had to say was all what Mackay sent/emailed was wrong, which is what he has now said.

I'm sure the media/press would still have said/written articles about the situation but nothing like what has happened & will continue.

If everything stays the same the next big news story will be when the FA make their decisions about Mackay & now Whelan.
