This isn't just a left v right argument. Margaret Hosge has some questions to answer Bryn Alyn was on Labours watch Too right it isn't. Margaret Hodge was on 'watch' whilst wide spread abuse was occurring through Islingtons Socials Services - she was, under Blair and Brown, Minister for Children. Hewitt, Dromey and Harman as widely reported where enmeshed in the PIE movement in the 70's. Elm Guest House names a number of Labour Party members as well as other (Sinn Fein being another) as alleged abusers. Cyril Smith was a senior Liberal and abuser of children. Trying to score cheap political points off the systematic abuse of children on a football website to prove ones 'right on' Ben Elton-esque 'Mrs Thatch' credentials - disgraceful, lame and cheap.

Edited by The Sash (09 Mar 2015 12.18pm) Indeed, its about the abuse of children, and their protection, by people in authority, who committed very serious sexual offences, and then used their position and influence to protect themselves. But equally those who knew and did nothing, or just accepted it, are equally to blame (if not more so) for accepting and endorsing such behavior. I would expect that Cyril Smith will be the tip of an increasingly terrible list of names, and that when as details emerge, it will rank up there with Jimmy Savile.

Edited by The Sash (09 Mar 2015 12.31pm) Indeed, of course it could be said that if they were say Muslim, then a big emphasis would be made out of that fact, rather than in this case where its almost certainly white Christian child rapists, who have utilized the poverty of care homes to feed their lusts. A nonse is a nonse, and those that enable and protect them are worse.

Agreed. I'd say that those involved in covering things up are almost as culpable as the abusers. An absurd popularist rule that will inevitably lead to far more problems, and put children at risk, because people will move towards covering their own arses, which will inevitably lead to children being taken into care unnecessarily.

Politically,I "hated" Thatcher. But I had a friend who worked as a civil servant in No 10 at the time who said she was a very decent and considerate person to work for on a one to one basis ,compared to many other politicians. I've heard that she was a total power freak and would use any situation to protect her position and family [somebody in particular was up to no good or maybe he was deliberately drawn into nefarious business activity]. It could well be that it was convenient to turn a blind eye but more likely that the very people she would turn to were already complicit and able to control her? Who knows? I think we've kind of seen that, like the Catholic Church, society of the past, particualy of the eras leading into the later 80s and early 90s, really didn't care about adults f**king children, provided they weren't 'their children'. And of course once it was uncovered, it would be quite logical to conclude that it had already been going on a while, and if it came out, that would likely result in a massive public backlash. Its not really surprising that it might have been covered up, as 'the greater good', much like the way that 'national security' is abused in the same manner.

Which is why the enquiries into the likes of Dolphin Sq or Elm Guest House will ultimately come to nowt in real terms...Files will be lost, key witnesses will either develop sudden amnesia or pop their clogs, a couple of low rent sacrificial lambs will end up in The Scrubs and everything will go on as before....
