Gareth Taylor

Big money signing from Bristol Rovers where he had a decent scoring rate came to us and could hit a cows bum with a banjo.
I felt sorry for the fella because you could not fault the effort but the harder he tried the worse he got.

Marco Gabbiadini maybe ? He was Noades choice post Ian Wright and we all wanted him to do well - and so did he - but he just was not up to it ! I remember the really frustrating bit is that Alan Shearer was going to be Wrights replacement but we wouldn't pay Saints the extra £100k they wanted so we went for Marco instead. Some things never change.......

Craig Harrison.
Target of the boo boys but won a few around with his total commitment. Real shame that he got a career ending injury at just 25.

In the woods there grew a tree. And a fine fine tree was he.

Tommy Langley.

The week before we bought him, I was talking to then manager, Dario Gradi. He asked me what I thought of Langley. My reply was along the lines of '' couldn't trap a bag of cement....a willing work/cart horse of a player ''

Five days later he was ours, and for a quite large fee.

His partnership with Chris Jones struck fear in the heart of the fans. Our own, i mean.

But he never gave up, chased every ball, and attitude wise he was spot on.

Ditto

Me and a mate formed the Tommy Langley fan club

To this date we are still the only two members

So how many times has Tommy refused to join?

Bert " chopper " Howe. Right back when Dick Graham was manager and Palace had a reputation for being over physical. Also, Ray Potter who was goalkeeper at my first game and let the ball slip through his legs and roll into the net. He went on to have a successful career with West Brom though.

Wouldn't that be a bit narcissistic trying to join your own fan club ????

glenn pennyfather.
the mighty atom.

Pennyfather was a Southend player bought by Coppel at about the same time as Geof Thomas came. In comparison Pennyfather couldn't compete with a man who eventually played for England, but he wasn't that bad, only in comparison.

he was dreadful , couldn't tackle , pass, never scored apart from that he was ok

I was actually quite pleased when we signed him, I saw him make his debut as a 16 year old for Chelsea in 1976 I think it was and he had a good start to his career, little did I know how crap he'd become, should've known really the type of player we were bringing in at that time!!
Did we really pay a large fee for him? I can't remember that, I thought we were pretty much skint at the time.

it was one of life's mysteries how he became so crap over such a short period of time, long term injuries and too many visits to the pie shop? he was touted as being the next Osgood for them plus an Under 23 international, Aylott has to be up there as well

Bert Howe was great - not subtle I admit, or quick, not much of a football brain - but he could stop some good players very effectively.
