These players have been 'successfully' converted into FULL BACKS, not centre backs. I agree but looking at the Scotland team yesterday, Charlie Mulgrew played as a centre-half but he has mainly played as a left-back and his partner in central defence Russell Martin has mainly played at right-back.

The thing is that Ward is a better right back. Although I think Richards would be a decent CB, I'd worry that at 5.11 he'd be too small for that role. His physique makes him look taller. Then again, Baresi was a dwarf but immense as a cb back in the day.

Are you all forgetting where Southgate played for us for a number of years before going to centre back. Even remember Coleman playing upfront, but I think we converted him from centre back to forward back to centre back again? But yes, there is a need for some elements to be coached into a player. You can only tell how to read the game, its down to the player to take it in and show it in a live game.

Sadly another player who's potential was squandered on a billionaires bench. Four or five years ago, on the verge of being the best full back in the country, 19 games in four seasons is a tragic waste.

I wonder if players are not finally wising up to this reality and the decision of Milner to eschew the wages for a useful role on the pitch elsewhere won't open the floodgates. Richards and Rodwell fading into obscurity from can't-miss prospect status isn't a great advertisement for a move to the Etihad.

In an interview with Sky Sports on the telly this morning Richards has said that he wants to play as a CB. Can't help but feel we missed a chance with this one, especially on a free.
