Anyone in football would know that clubs have their own ways , chants and 'terms of endearment' that those outside of the game endeavour to find offensive . The fans of the hotspurs from Tottingham are no exception . The word yid is as offensive to Jews as the word ****** is to black people. As we have a number of black players and supporters at Palace would you think it's acceptable that we refer to ourselves as ******s then - as a term of endearment of course Unless you're a Yid or black (or both, a 'blid') you're not really in a position to know whether that's true or not. I have heard anecdotes from Spurs supporting friends of Jewish people that are not in the slightest bit offended by the term when used at their ground. It's about context. As much as the N word is used by some black people. Some of the comments in this thread get more and more unbelievable It's true though. People are offended on other peoples behalf
Were white people who campaigned against slavery "offended on other people's behalf"? Were men who fought for votes for women "offended on other people's behalf"? Were non-Jews who fought the Nazis "offended on other people's behalf"? Are adults who campaign against child abuse "offended on other people's behalf"? Please explain why, if someone perceives an action as wrong, why they cannot speak up against it, whoever they are? Edited by Seth (21 Jan 2014 5.34pm) The problem with you people is that slaves,Muslims, blacks, the disabled, women, gays, hermaphrodites and indeed all minorities(and that includes foreign rapists we cant deport because of their rights and terrorists)all have full civil rights and probably more rights than the rest of us.But you still need the idea of prejudice to soothe your misguided consciencies. And if loving my country and being concerned with untrammeled immigration and crime makes me right wing I make no apology for that.I am not a thug though....

I checked with a Jewish Spurs supporter this evening what he thought He wasn't aware of any gas chamber songs. He said that first of all why don't people get that Jews come in many types, just like Christians. So the radical types may see things very differently from others. But he reckons at best all the Jewish supporters just about tolerate the Yid songs. Probably the same as our gay supporters. Not happy and don't get involved. He says why go there when you know it's going to upset people. Let's face it, the word is intended to be pejorative in most usage. I remember as a kid people talking very nastily about 'front wheelers'. Don't know why their own fans don't get that. Not celebrating their Jewish supporters, just annoying them.

A spirited rant, but what's it got to do with what I asked? Well, Seth, you generously invited him to make a complete fool of himself and it appears that he has speedily accepted your invitation. Words fail me, but I think if you were looking for a cogent response, you may be waiting a while. I make you right syd. There may be just a little too much froth in his mouth to allow him to speak coherently.

The term "yid" is offensive to most Jewish people. And why shouldn't it be? As I pointed out earlier, it was the derogatory term used by Mosley's fascists to refer to Jews. To the average Jewish person,it is equivalent to a South Londoner being called a " South London bas.ard" That's not to go OTT about the context in which Spurs fans use it...but those who mock being "politically correct" might want to give that a quick thought...Personally, did I get deeply worked up from Palace fans on the train from Seven Sisters to WHL last week singing about how they had foreskins...no... In answer to Seth's post responding to my earlier one, asking about re I'm Jewish and not a Zionist, yes, I think the best long term ideal outcome is a secular democratic state in what was British mandate Palestine...but in the short term, given realities, a 2 state solution is more practical and feasible... ...and I don't, like Zionists, think the solution to a thousand years of persecution, massacres and generally being stitched up as fall guys in large parts of Europe was to set up a jewish state in/within mandate Palestine...(and by the way, that is what Zionism is, not just an extended sized state)but, I don't demonise those who did and if I was from the generation in 1940's who had just seen 6 million of their communities gassed etc, I might well have felt exactly like them...so to demonise those Zionists is to miss what the real causal factor was...but that was hardly the Palestinian Christians' and muslims' and jews' fault..and I don't fall for the con that groups like Hamas have any interest in anything other than imposing their own strict one religion state...indeed one likely to be somewhat less democratic than Israel(an that's tasking on board all its faults)...

You lot dont like a few home truths do you?Once your arguments and brittle humour fall apart Im a w#####r,nutjob etc.Make your own mind up about things rather than following the herd and get a sense of humour.Anyway isnt it about time you started a thread about more muslims at Palace-maybe a reading of the Koran at half time rather than the Crystals!

When Spurs still get songs about gas chambers then I think the intention is honourable. Unbelievable [/quo
