And, unpalatable as it may seem, were it not for the US, we'd all be speaking German now. Nope,if it was`nt for the Germans we`d all be speaking German now.Their invasion of the Soviet Union caused their defeat in WW2.19 out of every 20 German combat soldiers who fought in the war were killed by the Soviets on the Eastern Front.

And before anyone says the USA won WW1,the final offensive in 1918 was overwhelmingly a British victory.

Sherlock, who's inventing history? Regarding WWI, I would say primarily. British and Commonwealth forces spearheaded the defeat of the German army in the field. They took almost as many prisoners and guns as France, the USA and Belgium combined. But the other Allies must have done some serious fighting in 1918. One must also remember that France had also borne the brunt of the fighting until 1916. Regarding WWII. Your figure of 19 out of 20 German combat soldiers killed by the USSR is a little off. That would mean the Allies killed about 160,000 men, whilst the Soviets killed the other 3,100,000. 5-600,000 would be closer to the mark. Though I would agree that it was the Soviet army that did the majority of the work. Before America officially entered the war it helped GB, with Radar technicians (little known fact), huge amounts of shipping (which was in short supply) and vast amounts of military eqipment. American warships also took on convoy duties to free British ships for duty elsewhere. In addition, they provided huge amounts of money (most of which we never paid back). Re America winning the war, I have already posted on this. They provided almost all the logistic lift equipment and transport aircraft the Soviets possessed. Thus allowing them to move their armies, and concentrate their production on tanks and guns. Furthermore, they produced almost as many tanks as GB, Germany and Russia combined! So though I don't believe they won the war single handed, they did make victory possible. We were not alone for over two years, try 18 months. After all, we do not want to invent history. Lastly, there was not a big percentage supporting Hitler in the USA. There were a large number of citizens who wanted to stay out of another European War, and why not. However, their president believed in helping the fellow democratic powers and he had the final say.

I used to get abuse in Dundalk because of my English accent, from time to time.Vigilantes are modern day. Having said that,it`s a nice town,I`m just a little wary taking my Indian girlfriend over for the first time.
If anyone knows Cork, they will probably know a really good school, which has fantastic teaching. It's a nationalist school, where the kids must speak Irish and know the culture and many of my family go there. Imagine if a similar school opened in England - there would be outrage! A bloke, age 25, came over from N Ireland and joined our Sunday football team a few weeks ago and he really cannot believe how friendly everyone is over here. He just cannot understand how people open doors for him etc and never thought we'd welcome in to the team as well as we have done. A real example of how tolerant and friendly London (England) is. No, but all British and Americans are evil... If you ever go to New York for example, you will see how friendly people are out there. If people opened their minds a bit more, they may not be so judgemental to disparage countries to suit their anti-US/GB ideas. Edited by Penge Eagle (17 Dec 2003 12:33am)

I agree about NY Penge, I was there last year (god that sounds cool, at least to me), and everyone was REALLY nice. Especially the women (single lads, New York women love the British accent, they ALL think you knoe Hugh Grant!) and people actually stop in the street and help you if you're lost. Even Brooklyn and the Bronx are okay. But be careful in Queens, they have colour related gang war. No, not that colour related, but one gang wears red, the other wears blue. And there is FEARCE rivalry. I wore my Palace shirt and no one knew which side I was on. Hehehe! PS. Allow at least 4hrs before flight time to get to and check in at JFK.

Especially the women (single lads, New York women love the British accent, they ALL think you knoe Hugh Grant!) Yeh, it's exactly like in the film 'Love Actually'! I've spent quite a bit of time in various parts of America, including New York, and obviously, you do meet alot of really nice people, but I think it would be fair to say that the majority are brainwashed into the 'everything American must be good' ethos. I think it is much healthier to be prepared to think about and question the decisions your government are making on your behalf.
