The following letter appears in today's Telegraph -

Sir - Winston Churchill once sat next to an air chief marshal’s wife, who wore an aeroplane brooch on her ample bosom.

Noticing him looking at it, she asked,

“ Are you admiring my aeroplane?”

Churchill responded, “No, Madam, the Aerodrome.”

Is not it sad, that you have heard everything before, but
it has never turned you into someone worth listening to?

Breaking News:

AT 3.57am this morning, two Muslims have crashed a speedboat into the Thames barrier in London.

Police thought it might be the start of ram-a-dam.

Later, they have been advised that Ramadan in London did not start until 4.25am on Friday.

Better

Jim Davidson/Michael Barrymore?? - Interesting wrong comedian mix-up there Jaime

Same kind of person, all round averager. Will/can do anything but excells at nothing, loves himself, hated by everyone who regards talent.

Hosts dreadful dreary shows of lite entertainment that are instantly forgetable.

So a person who uses stereotypes is a racist? Well, yes a racist must use stereotypes but then again this is a very tricky area because stereotyping is normal human behaviour as a product of pattern recognition.

Its more derogatory stereotypes, that associate negative traits to a group, in this case blacks, but it could be resorting to the 'all jews are tight with money' etc. Its pretty much a definition of racism.

Quote Stirlingsays at 26 Aug 2011 1.49pm

The same logic could be used to suppose that if I make a mother-in-law joke it means that I dislike or hate mother-in-laws.....Jokes shouldn't be used as proof of anything.

Indeed, theres the argument of it being misogenistic, and given its a trend thats long since past. Of course most comedians would make jokes about 'their mother in law', rather than all mother in laws.

Quote Stirlingsays at 26 Aug 2011 1.49pm

For example, some ethic comedians make jokes about 'black issues' or being Iranian, are they not stereotyping their own race? Isn't it racist to say that a black person can make jokes about 'black issues' but a white person can't because they are white?

No, see the bit about irony, and of course the excellent Office Sketch about Chris Rock.

Quote Stirlingsays at 26 Aug 2011 1.49pm
Is a black comedian racist if he says white people can't dance or jump? No he isn't.
The whole thing as a basis of proof doesn't stand up when it is examined.

Its called reverse racism. The point to bear in mind is the historical context of racism, which typically has been the idea of a 'white supremacy', as exampled in the philosophy of Imperialism. The experience of racism, historically is such that the experience of white northern europeans isn't really on a par with say black, asian or indians exposed to white northern european cultures.

Quote Stirlingsays at 26 Aug 2011 1.49pm
The term 'racist' is thrown around way too easily, it should be kept for those who encourage hatred.

Or enables prejudice, or relies on it. Racism hasn't always been associated with hatred, as exampled in Imperialism. Its also, the empowerment of a 'superiority' either racially, or culturally.

Quote Stirlingsays at 26 Aug 2011 1.49pm
This said I much prefer an environment where racial jokes aren't used, but mainly because they can lead to unpleasantness and in the weak minded eventually a belief that they are more than just a joke.

So you're saying they empower racist ideas and reactions, but thats fine. I'll draw a line and say they actually have to be funny, or ironic, to avoid actually being racist.

I think we may like this Stirlingsays poster, Cucks, don't you? Whose turn is it for the initiation ceremony?

I like him too, he's interesting, intelligent and capable of debate/arguement. You can't ask much more of that in a chap. I generally prefer people who don't think like I do, keeps me sharp.

Incidently, the debates on here about Britishness really helped with an Essay I recently wrote on the question 'Evaluate the statement that Britishness is about shared values, ideas and culture'.

88% scored (some bad references cost me five points). Cheers chaps.

I got some Cited Ins confused with texts I'd read. Although my lecturer was suprised by references to Simulcra and Simulation and The Order of Things, and a bit annoyed, as it mean she had to then read some of the former.

While I'm waiting for the quality contributions, which will set an example...

Letter from Australia:

A Toyota pickup commercial, far less boring than the ones we are used to!

Finally, if nothing can be truly asserted, even the following claim would be false,
the claim that there is no true assertion.
However, truth, we can establish is subjective, so what does this statement mean?

As such the nature of reality is thus defined by the individuals perceptual lingusitic manifestation, of the aprori facits of physical reality that engage awareness, and inaccurately expressed through language.

Experience is an after thought of the experience that has now passed.

That's clearly been copied and pasted, Jamie. The spelling and grammar are spot on.

Epic fail, old chap.

Cheeky f**k.

The bolded bit is Aritotle on the nature of metaphyical qualities.

Sometime even I get lucky!

Not wishing to get dragged into this any further but, for the record, Roy 'Chubby' Brown has got to be the most odious, unfunny, repulsive c*nt ever.

I like comedians who offend me, ever since he did the 'I thought you'd all be at home f**king your kids', I've been partial. I quite like Manning, his humours a bit dated maybe, but its style and presentation is the epitome of the professional stand up of his era.

But Davidson, is a dreary drudge, about as funny as Lenny Henry and as engaging as Barrymore.
