Thanks for the memories Bubbs. The amazing thing is me and my mate must have been standing only a few feet from the guy taking the pictures. Spent my early years in the Whitehorse Lane end.[/quote]
If I think back now, I started in 80/81 in the whitehorse 'starter' terrace, then had a couple of seasons in the kids section at the front of the holmesdale, then went onto the AW, moving in around the singing bit in 1985. When the AW went all seater I went back to stand on the holmesdale.
spring 1989 standing in the AW to the left of the halfway line in with the singers, one of the greatest times and places to be a palace fan

18.3.89 Palace 1 Sunderland 0 The charge to promotion begins. A lucky victory through a Bright penalty lifts us out of our rut and onto a run of 9 wins in our next 11 games. In the picture a Sunderland defender is down injured as Wright looks on.

Fantastic pictures - especially as you've captured actual goals being scored!

9.4.88 Palace 1 Aston Villa 1 Forget Bostock's return, this was the day Andy Gray returned with his promotion chasing rivals, after walking out acrimoniously on Palace 5 months earlier, and didn't we make him have it... You can see him in both pictures trying his best to put one over on us. The problem was he tried too hard, and gave away a penalty with 5 mins to go after taking out Wrighty, who duly got up and slammed home the equaliser from the spot. They were the better team all day long, and it was one of those rare occasions that you felt we actually nicked something we didn't deserve. This is the game I was the match mascot! I'm having them to go with the others I've got, cheers Bubbs. Great photos, and memories, all the way through this thread and from the Whitehorse Lane end too. Was in there for almost all my early games, but in the director's box for that one.

Looks like you used to stand right next to me! I was only a tiddler 11 year old back then, but I used to just about see over the top of those huge metal railings just behind the goal at that end. From the perspective you took most of those pictures from I reckon we were within 3-4 metres of each other.

15.4.89 Palace 2 Portsmouth 0 Pic 1: In the distance Bright celebrates scoring our 2nd.
I remember the first news that broke quite early on was that the match was suspended due to crowd trouble. Awful, awful day. Came home and couldn't bring myself to watch the images on the TV - i felt so sick for them. I just kept thinking: that could've been me. Any football fan that used to go in those days will tell you of the odd games when it felt dangerously crowded, especially being a kid rammed up aginst those bloody fences.

Been raking through all my old photos recently and found a load that were taken of Palace matches around the mid to late 80's. A friend of mine was a keen photographer and would take many photos during games and pass them on to me. They're not professional shots, but over the years have become timepieces of a bygone era. Still find them fascinating to look at, taking you back to those days on the terraces at Selhurst and away. Will post them up on here as and when I scan them. Hope you enjoy them too. 8.4.86 Palace 2 Portsmouth 1 Andy Gray scoring one of his two goals in a great night at Selhurst against a high flying Portsmouth side.
Just when I thought that I was out...........they pull me back in |

I'm almost certain that Pompey game was at night (25 years ago now!!!!!), and also remember the rain lashing down in the first half and getting totally drenched. Gray's second goal that day was one of the best i've ever seen at Selhurst: he was literally standing by the Sainsbury's End corner flag on the left wing, smashed the ball with the outside of his boot and it flew over Knight and into the net. Not sure if he meant it but with Andy Gray it wouldn't surprise me if he did.

1.10.88 Palace 4 Plymouth 1 Our first win of the season after 7 attempts, and started a run of 6 wins out of 7 - the only defeat being that incredible 5-4 defeat at Blackburn. Gary O'Reilly and Wrighty between the nets await a corner, with Pembo on the edge of the box. Attachment: h plymouth 4-1 1.10.88.jpg (297.23Kb)

4.2.89 Ipswich 1 Palace 2 Two first half goals from Ian Wright in a space of 2 minutes seals victory for us at Portman Road. This was the game where Jeff Hopkins was sent off right at the end after the ref confused him with John Pemberton who had already been booked. The ref then put in his report that he'd sent off Hopkins for 'serious foul play', to cover his mistake, but after a video was sent to the FA disciplinary committee, they surprisingly overturned the decision realising ref Penrose had got it wrong and deleted the sending off offence from the records. Suckling, O'Reilly and Pemberton.
