Charlton away -night game-'74/75.First away game.
Me and my mate(both only 12)took the bus down to Woolwich, walked down Woowich New Road to the Valley, got in to the ground(unfortantly the covered Charlton end-but great atmosphere-none the less-all without reletive incidents!
However it was all about to change for the return trip back to Woolwich.
On the walk back we were approached by a group of black lads who demanded that we give them our scarves.(Back in the day for the younger holers this was the customary thing to do-nick scarves from unsuspecting fans home or away!!!)
They then proceeded to nick my mates scarf, when they relised that we were Palace not Charlton,a cry went up 'there Palace - get em',(It was like hearing the starting gun at 100 meters final).
So me and my mate legged it back to Woolwich being chased all the way.Just as we got to market square our bus was pulling away and we just managed to jump on the platform with our pursuers now giving up the chase!!!
GOD I LOVE THE OLD ROUTE MASTERS!!
& WHAT A BUZZ!!

I seem to remember a firm called the Nifty Fifty from New Addington?, quiet a few got arrested in morning raids.

A few away games stick out

Any Brighton game but this one the most 1988ish after being bricked and having bottles thrown at us with running battles, we all made it back to the station, where Palace where all mixed in with the Seaweed, no one knew who was who, all standing on the bridge over the station, until the Police helpfully told all the passengers for London to stand on the left all passengers for Brighton on the right, there was a parting of the waves, now we all knew who was who and it kicked off big style on the bridge and down on to the platform.

Ipswich walking away from the ground some bloke asked us the way to the train station, My mate said "Sorry I don't know I don't come from around here." he was kicked to the ground, and a bloke pulled a blade on him
we knocked the bloke with the blade to the ground grabbed my mate and ran, thus spending the next 20 min in a keystone cops chase scene, we eventually got back to the car and driving out of Ipswich we ran into them again this time them chasing the car.

Bournmouth. It all kicked off in the away end after someone let off fireworks and rockets into the main stand, the police charged into the way end through the gate in front of the goal (They still had fences and gates back then) about 8 coppers got in when someone managed to shut the gate and these police were now trapped they got a good kicking, before reinforcements arrived, sadley this was the game where the Bournmouth steward got stabbed (and I think died)

Just curious, but did we have an actual firm and what was it called?

Edited by jdavis121 (31 Jan 2011 8.08pm)

yep.....dennis warren, he took 'em all on...sometimes on he's own, still see him sitting in the holmesdale.

Yeah Denny Warren ,went to school with him and a few others who could handle them selves.I still see him now and then at Palace,he is a bit more mellow now.We got in a few scrapes as you do,we were young.I was in the army some of that time, suppose it was too much testosterone, that`s what I say anyway.

Does anyone remember an early round in the cup v Tooting & Mitcham ? stabbings after the game on figs marsh. Chelsea supporters turned up supprting T & M for the day. I remember 1 bloke on crutches being attacked on the terrace and thrown over the advertising boards onto the pitch. Similar story at Brentford in a pre season friendly. this was also taken over by chelsea scum as they had no match on that day. Thank god these days are now over. being an old gitnow I take my son as often as I can but would be horrified if I knew he was going to be put through this

I was at that Brentford match. Having heard the Palace singing, I entered the ground only to find it was the home end. A fight broke out which as you said were Chelsea boys. I was turned out of that end into what I thought was a safe area of the seats( I think) down one side, but it happened again, it was only when I got down to the away end that I felt safe. Can't even remember what the game was like. Was looking over my shoulder for the whole match!
