It's strange that current consensus is to reign in spending to get the economy on track and going again, yet to get the banks going, government needs to invest...
They would have been wrong. The reality is that the banks had to be propped up, or the country really would have gone down the toilet, as the industry would have collapsed like dominos, taking other related industries and peoples savings etc with it. What didn't need to happen is the kowtowing to the Bankers that followed, the government should have stood firm.
A short death or a long drawn out one. Hayek, who Thatcher followed would have been shocked by this huge Keynesian experiment....All to maintain the status quo...A status quo that was rotten to the core. The destruction would have been temporary also there were other alternatives to just using borrowed cash to keep afloat failed businesses....Untried methods that weren't going to be risked...Instead we everyone trotted out Keynes and saved the very criminals who caused the disaster....With their giant bonuses. I liked Sal Khan's alternative of investing in new banks.....There was no pain free alternative but I don't believe that the solutions chosen were the best ones. Edited by Stirlingsays (11 Apr 2013 12.02am) From a political stand point - which ever party had done that could have kissed good bye to ever being re-elected. Plus some of the untried methods represented an unknown gamble. I like the idea of new banks being formed. I understand the need to keep the industry afloat to prevent a meltdown, but not the essential perpetuation of a sick system. Those responsible for the mismanagement should not have been protected nor should their positions have been assured. The problem isn't the 'bailing out' its the fact that nothing has really changed as a result. The Government was in a position of absolute strength to restructure the industry and capitulated to a status quo that comprised of self interest, rather than national interest.

Terrible shame. A great Prime Minister, and her death has certainly shown the true colours of a number of people on here. Celebrating the death of a very unwell old lady - unbelievable.

I have to agree.....there are some people on here that talk out their backsides and do NOT really know how much maggie did for this country and how she pulled us back from the brink when we were going down the pan due to strikes and nationalised companies that were dragging us down. Many on here that are old enough to have lived through the period she was Prime Minister will know that the unions had virtually taken over the mad house But she took them to task and beat them. Arthur Scargill was on the picket lines with the miners making them attack police and everyone that was not on their side...I know because I was backing the police with fellow marines on the picket lines. The miners got sucked into a situation that they did not really understand but followed that idiot Scargill who incidently got shunned by the unions some years ago due to lining his pockets and bumming accomodation costs through his union funds. He was a total waste of space and did more harm than good. At the time of the strikes coal was going out of fashion anyway due to health worries. in fact the "Green movement" started at that time and was the start of all the "Save the Planet brigade". I wholly endorse these sentiments. Willo
