The idea that the President could just go rogue is fantasy. He could also have both Houses under effective control. He already has his feet in the Supreme Court kicking the ball his way. He can place whoever he likes into the AG job and control the Justice Department. The only places he might have issues is the military, but he can sack the Chiefs and install place men. Getting cooperation from every State might prove harder, but does that matter to us? So it’s really dangerous.

Trump will go after those who went after him, there is little doubt about that. They should have had the common sense to leave him alone, but common sense isn't a feature of the Democrats. I certainly don't think Trump will leave office with the danger that he could be put in jail....what that entails I'm not sure....but Trump is essentially a 90s democrat so all this Hitler stuff is just wild.

Yep, you look at Clinton's politics in the nineties, it's not that different....the Democrats loved him when he was donating to them. Both Clinton's went to Trump's wedding and if I remember correctly he was a Democrat up until Obama. Edited by Stirlingsays (18 Jul 2024 1.40pm)

We live in the era of cancel culture, which I've always been against. We have just seen Tenacious D cancel their tour because of a stupid comment and while it saddens me that we live in this environment we should remember where this started....because it wasn't on the right. We can only hope that at some point people chill out.

It has nothing to do with agreeing or not with what someone says but instead built upon the knowledge that suppression and repression requires an authoritarian state that persecutes those it considers heretics. At a fundamental level I think the only way you avoid a pile of bones is via decentralisation....which is exactly the opposite direction that Europe wants to move in.

A controlled homogeneity where the masses must conform, but the rulers enjoy the spoils, with no democracy worth the name. A continent of consumers with low life expectations, no opinions, no culture, no nationality, and no genetic identity. How lovely.

It's going to be difficult because nothing we want will happen and the centralist neoliberal project will continue and only favour the current elite for a while yet.

I caught the tail end of an interview on Radio 4’s PM which Evan Davis had with John Bolton this evening. Did anyone else hear it in full? I don’t particularly like Bolton’s politics, or that he agreed to work for Trump, but admired the way he stood up to him in ways that others don’t. He is both intelligent, articulate and always worth listening too. He obviously knows Trump, and his inner circle, well and understands how his mind works. He was asked two questions in the time I was listening. Firstly, what will the Democrats do. His answer they have an incredibly poor choice to make. Either stick with Biden and definitely lose, or change to another and probably lose. The second was what would Trump do if he lost. To which the answer was that he would never accept it and there would be chaos, because he simply has no belief that anyone could beat him fairly, so there must be something underhand involved. However, Bolton doesn’t think it would lead to civil war but that the authorities would contain the reaction. His point being if Trump was unable to overturn a legitimate result from inside the White House then he has no chance of doing so from beside a pool in Florida. Bolton also recommended that the Democrats now need to rein back on the rhetoric and just allow Trump to show himself as unsuitable. There is no need to go over the top. Just let him do it himself. Bolton said the OTT stuff is helping Trump. The Democrats need to have their ducks in a row asap. I would like to think it’s all been part of a master plan, but it doesn’t look that way at all.

Looks as though the pressure is mounting for Biden to step aside.
