Great to see that. I find it really interesting. I’m quite proud of us also! Lol

I think something to add though, is that Palace have been roughly around 10th in terms of wage bills in the last 5 years. What that shows is that we are not exactly cheap skates. We pay our players well, and so they stay, hence we don’t sell often and we don’t buy often. We have kept a consistent squad together for a long time. I wonder if that’s how we’ve managed to stay up so long.

Exactly it's the whole package - transfer fee, agents fees, signing on fees and wages.
Lerma didn't include a transfer fee but i suspect the total 3 year cost will be over £15m, possibly £20m.

I remember when we signing Bats on loan from Chelsea we covered his £100k plus a week wages and paid a loan fee - so c £6m for the year. Brentford bought Toney for £5m and his wages were probably c£10k a week. A similar investment in total for 1 year.

Palace do spend money, perhaps not always wisely

Finding a striker, who scores regularly is like try to find hens teeth, everyone is looking. Spurs thought they obtained one in Richarlison, who has turned out to be a £70m flop. So with the budget Freeman is working with its nigh impossible.

He was last season i agree, but, he maybe a different beast this season. He scored a hattrick couple of days ago in Spurs last game in a 5-1 win . . . [Link]

I said it before the window opened . If we manage to hold on to the players we have bar Zaha it will be a good window for us . We will be alot better off in December when the window opens as we are saving 450k per week . Maybe a few loans . What and who we need and what and who we get are by far two different things . We need imho left back cover ,a striker a winger but will prob end up with a 3rd choice goalkeeper and a few players for the academy. Its the Palace way .

I agree with you. This is a squad with potential to get better and better. Just keeping this squad together, it’s likely to improve each year.

I might get shot down for saying this, but I wouldn’t mind a new left back to start games…and have Mitchell as cover. His form has been poor since he was picked for England.

Apart from the top 6 teams no one is really signing anyone. Luton and Sheffield United are going straight back down and that leaves 8 to 10 other teams vying for that last spot. I’m no clairvoyant, but we will be fine!

Same was said about Bournemouth and Forest last season. Relying on the promoted teams having a duffer didn't help last season. In relation to transfer windows think the writing was on the wall last season. Two very flat windows in terms of transfer activity, Doucoure apart. Lerma looks a good recruit, similar to Doucoure but perhaps with more goal threat but we cannot sit still in other areas this season, as gaps have appeared. It stands to reason unless some players suddenly find a run of form we need to try to be stronger. We need to be as we sacked our manager with 10 games to go fearing relegation. January was a chance to strengthen the squad but this did not happen. Easy to blame the manager but not sure how much support he got in the transfer window. Think there was a mindset within the club that everything was rosy as we had good form pre World Cup but the wheels fell off after that. The worry is due to good form at the end of the season nothing will move with new recruits now. Hoping post Zaha things will move quicker in the transfer area. COYP !!

Thanks for the reply Lanzo. I hope you are right about the 2/3 signings. I will believe it when I see it!

I think poor is being slightly generous. He made PVA look like a great defender at times last year although he improved a little towards the end of the season. Having one specialist player in the squad for a position is not good practice. I thought Adaramola might have come on a bit in his development but I’m not sure where he is at, at present.

Wolves will struggle
Everton haven’t improved much
Luton will struggle…and they won’t spend £100m in January like Bournemouth did
Sheff Utd might struggle
Bournemouth might struggle
Fulham might struggle without Mitrovic
West Ham could struggle if they don’t invest well

We will struggle without Zaha and Olise…but we will surely bring a forward in soon.

That's brilliant. While we have no wide players, we can rely on three teams being worse than us.

After 10 years in the Premier League, I'd like (hope) we wouldn't start another season comparing ourselves to relegation candidates. Would love to start a season with some confidence of a top 10 finish

Its just close season doom and gloom mate , the longer the summer the worse team we have got by the time we kick off .

A couple of wins and the patrons will be talking of Europe and why isn't Mitchell picked for England

We’ve lost 4 first team players in Milivojevic, McArthur, Zaha and our previous 2nd choice keeper Butland. We have 3 pre season injuries one of which is long term (Olise) and the other mostly permanent (Ferguson).

We have rumours circulating that we may lose Guaita, Mateta, Guehi, Doucoure, Andersen , Eze and Olise although it is unlikely that more than one of these will leave, (perhaps three including Guaita and Mateta).

We have brought in Lerma.

This to me is not so much a no spend transfer window but a negative spend window so far. We don’t even have a full squad at present and yet again we are going through a pre season without being able to bed new players in. It’s not an ideal situation and I can understand the total frustration of fans.

We need at least 3, probably 4 players through the door to just be treading water. Can we seriously see this happening given our previous?

That's the negative view of the situation. I'd look at it more like this.

In midfield we've lost Milovojevic and McArthur, who barely played last season, and brought in Lerma who should be first choice. For me that's an upgrade.

We've lost Butland who was out on loan all season anyway and wouldn't even be second choice.

The impact of Zaha going is obviously huge and he needs replacing.

None of the players rumoured to be going have actually left yet.

Of course we need players as I've said in several other threads and I am also pissed off with how late we're leaving it. However, as it stands losing Zaha is the only significant negative change to the squad and if we bring it 3/4 players without losing anyone else significant we will still have an extremely good core to our first XI.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...
