I'd of quietly suggested than as opposed to playing 'Woke' cards and attacking Trump, Democrats would have been far better putting forward a competent candidate. Would probably go against every play in the political guidebook however.

Their problem is consent.

Like every party they are comprised of fractions. Biden's fraction don't want to give up power (no shocks there) and even if they did they would insist that Harris took over as she's the next in line.

They won't be able to sell Harris not taking over as that's literally meant to be her job if Biden steps down.

The Democrat party is very progressive and imagine the uproar if they passed over a black woman (even a very unpopular one like Harris). She would have to give up the opportunity to run.....hard to see that.

Biden can point to Trump himself...who was widely believed to be behind in 2016 and shocked most when it won on the night. Biden isn't so far behind that he thinks it's impossible....added to the fact that the Democrats....by abusing their power...will make Trump's campaigning very difficult via their various proxies.

Maybe they can convince Biden to step down....The Democrats are desperate and after lying for years about Biden are now changing tactic and using public pressure and attacking him in the open.

America's political classes.....Republican or Democrat have the ethics of pond life.

Kamala Harris has been sidelined by the party for most of her term due to her perceived unpopularity (even lower than Joe in polls). Coupled with her primary role as the border tzar to address immigration concerns makes her a very poor replacement!

I’m very worried what the next 4 months will look like, let alone the next 4 years!!

They will probably go for Newsom or Whitmire but both California and Chicago are dumpster fires now!!

If the plan was for Biden not to run then he and the Democrats are even more duplicitous than I thought. if Biden is replaced at this late stage by Harris or Michelle Obama et al the electorate will have been deprived of an opportunity to assess them.

Nomination campaigns are a brutal affair and whilst only the members of the party can vote they are covered widely, the rest of America is watching and getting a feeling for the candidates.

Any replacement at this late stage firstly denies the party members their choice and secondly means that the candidate avoids the scrutiny of the media and public. *

I have had this feeling for a while now that a white horse candidate will emerge for the democrats.

As for the debate last night which I did not watch even the BBC is saying he was a disaster so he must have been bad. Meanwhile a number of notable Hollywood Celebs are already calling for Biden to be replaced.

*Aaron Sorkin's film with Michael Douglas as the President has an interesting premise. Douglas's wife dies just before he runs so he has public sympathy and his unnamed opponent choose not to attack his character so he ha an easy ride into the White House.

I wonder if Sorkin is advising the Democrats.

Duplicitous or creative and calculating? The answer to which depends on which side of the political divide you sit. If your overriding priority is to avoid at all costs another 4 years of the worst President in history, someone who tried to overturn democracy, then any tactics used are justified.

Any candidate will already be well enough known, but Trump’s character deficits make just about anyone else preferable.

The rules make it difficult, but if it can be done it should be done. Biden isn’t stupid, despite his age and obvious difficulties, so he will know that. Upsetting a few about a lack of choice is a small price to pay. Those that are, are not likely to switch to Trump anyway, so much to gain but little to lose, in my book.

Putting politics to one side - and ok I know it's hard as this is the supposed leader of the Western world, I just felt sad watching the Presidential debate.

On the one hand Boden looked just confused and that he really should not have been there let alone as President and Trump equally struck me as one of those mad old men who are perhaps not seeing a world as it is as opposed to what they want it to be.

US politics is about money and these days that shows.

I’m not sure last night could be “spun” as creative or calculating but more an embarrassment to the party? The panic button will be pushed immediately but the political infighting will begin as people such as Hillary and Bernie join the conversation again!

Terrible decision making to think Joe could last another 4 months let alone another 4 years! Let’s see what the press secretary makes of last night if she turns up for work today!

I'm no fan of Trump, but he ran circles around Biden last night.

Just comparing against the debates 4 years ago, Biden has degenerated so much. If he keeps going at the same pace he's going to be a vegetable soon.

Democrats should replace him, but they won't.

Thing is I don't think Trump put in a good performance. His points weren't that well argued nor clear and he was his usual boastful self....though he kept the boorish behaviour down, which is an improvement on 2020.

However, in the main Trump performed like a slightly under prepared version of himself.

The problem for the Democrats was that Biden had a shocker and showed obvious cognitive decline....incoherent sentences, forgetting words, stuttering...which considering all the drugs they must have them on just illustrates where he is......though he improved in the second half.

So clearly another presidency where both options are not there upon a meritocratic basis but because of party politics.

However, if America had anything like the belief in its constitution that it had in the past, Biden would be made to step down......and as much of an over promoted joke that Harris is....she would be president.

Low bar. Pick Trump as he is the only one (just) able to move unaided.

And a childish p1ssing contest over golf handicaps. Americans must have watched the debate through the cracks of their fingers.

Agreed, but anyone who thinks Joe plays to a 6 handicap or is it 8 2 seconds later is deluded!!! He can’t stop lying and Donald can’t stop exaggerating and boasting!

Strange times!!
