The club is bigger than any player, yes, but the club is also only as good as its players. If it were simple, or even possible, to replace Zaha with someone as good or better then the club could set him a deadline, but it's not. Whether we like it or not, Zaha holds all the cards. We need him more than he needs us. Exactly this!! We might not need him as much as we used too, but for what he’s given us over the years and being arguably our best ever player I think he deserves the time. I know I joke about him deciding who’s going to fill his bank account next, but you’re a long time retired and at his age, he must be thinking about possibly being able to win something as well.

My feeling is we are for the time being better with Wilf, than without, he is a better than average player no doubt that speaks for its self.

Yep, and the club has known for years that he'd be facing this massive decision and that he will assess every option. The only decision Palace have had to make is whether they are prepared to be one of the options Zaha has, or not. They have, quite rightly, decided to be. Now they wait, like they knew they would have to.

The definition of chopping your nose off to spite your face. Zaha, for all his faults, is irreplaceable. The club plainly feel he is critical to the teams fortunes to have offered the contract they have, so why would they then set an artificial deadline for a player who, firstly, has done more than any other to make the club successful, secondly is virtually impossible to replace, and thirdly, the club really want to keep? All this bollocks on here about getting rid of Zaha like he's a problem just baffles me. The question is not whether Zaha has faults as a player, the question is how many clubs our size get to have a player that good? Not many. Zaha couldn't have been more transparent about what a huge decision he has to make this summer, the club have known for years that he'd be weighing up his options this summer, and quite right too. 'Sign by Friday Wilf, or else!' Or else what? We'll sign Demari f***ing Gray?! Couldn’t disagree more ! Zaha could keep this going indefinitely and then go elsewhere and we are disadvantaged into a last minute signing at a potentially higher price. And don’t give me that Demari Gray BS , I don’t rate him any more than you do

But you do appreciate that is the level of player we can generally afford? If we lose Zaha we won't be replacing him with a player anything like as good.

Fair enough, treat Wilf as if he is just another signing, just as long as first of all the club have a very strong alternative in place , which may involve more than one signing and different way of playing, and a cut off to accommodate the other options because the position is vacant as of July 1st .

That's about £27m we'll spend over three years. If you want any kind of proven top flight pedigree then it costs around the same amount the Zaha deal is worth to buy a player for £15-20m and pay them £75k pw for three years. As you say, that's an Edouard. Or maybe a Townsend a few years ago or as I say, probably a Gray or someone now. That gives us a good yardstick of the value of keeping Zaha. For his faults, if a player like Wilf was available on a free we'd have no chance at all of affording or attracting them.

I do - but the fact is that Zaha could go elsewhere at the 11th hour leaving Palace with the likes of Gray while potentially better options pass us by. I would like to see Wilf stay, don’t get me wrong , but I’m questioning the rationale of letting Palace be his choice by process of elimination - we look like being his choice of last resort

That's exactly why the last day of the transfer window is so busy, everyone waits to see if they get their first choice option, then if not their second, and so on.

Well without reposting my stance on it , let’s see what happens. I’m well aware of how the transfer window works and if we wind up with Zaha leaving and us signing Demari Gray, expect to hear from me ! Edited by NEILLO (09 Jul 2023 8.11pm)
