Zaha can't make his mind up what he's doing and that plays a major part in what we'll do in the transfer window - which in all honestly wouldn't be much anyway. We only have one left back, we've just renewed Ward, Clyne and Tomkins so that says something, and we've lost Macca and Luka (who should have gone ages ago anyway). Lerma might be good business but its not enough to stay in the devision. So giving the managers job to a 76 year old because no one else wants it (which has to has to be down to lack of funds and working for Parish), then in my view its all a bit two bob really...not where we should be after £1.2-£1.4bn quid. Edited by HesHereHesThere (27 Jun 2023 5.15pm) Your 1.2 bn is what? gross revenue? Give or take that 100 million per year in PL. Current year player wage bill alone 119 million. That's where most of the money goes before any other outgoings. Most reports say Brendan Rogers wanted the job but at exorbitant salary demands. Doubtless many others were interested but how many had the required experience will never be known Edited by HKOwen (01 Jul 2023 3.11am)

In our case I think it is reasonable for fans to wonder if 12/14th placed finishes are our lot after 10 seasons in the PL or is there maybe a breakthrough to 10th and above on the horizon? Or is the can kicking part of a masterful visionary strategy for the future? Edited by southnorwoodhill (01 Jul 2023 8.47am)

Why is it so hard for people to understand, we don't have the money to break in to top seven. Whether we finish 8th or 17th is only a matter of prize money. More or less 2 mill per place, Sours won 6.6. mill more than us, and we won 2.2 mill more than Chelsea. Our PL payment for last season was 148 million. 1 Manchester City £170m Source : Mirror Sport Edited by HKOwen (01 Jul 2023 8.44am)

I'm not sure that players proper salaries are available in the public domain as that would surly cause friction between them. Supposedly offering Wilf £200k a week is bonkers, not just in terms of the money but the message it sends to other players. Yes, we're hamstrung because we pay big salaries to mediocre players so have limited funds to replace them...that's a bollox strategy tbh and borders on negligence. Three teams above us that I view as being similar to us are Brighton, Brentford and Fulham. All of which in my opinion have better ground than us, appear to have a better operating model than us, have a forward thinking young manager and finished above us. I have a bit of green eye looking at what is going on at those clubs and comparing them to our carry on which has no money, run by a committee and has a very lopsided squad. Three right backs and one left back FFS, along with two strikers that need to be taken to a trade descriptions tribunal. But as Parish says in every match day programme "Carry on up the Palace"

As for that South Coast team, I accept it rankles how well they have done over the last two seasons, but as has been said elsewhere, how long can they thrive with an ever changing 1st team squad? Have they really got ready-made replacements for Mac Allister and Caicedo (if the latter does indeed leave)? Having said all that, I have to agree that having paid ludicrously high salaries so as to retain a stable first team squad over most of our tenure in the PL, we have hamstrung ourselves. I really do hope that:

Just got a push notification from the club confirming it. Disappointing but grimly predictable from the start. Will of course support him and the team completely but I do think it's a cop out and all I can say is that we better invest in the squad this summer now because if we start the season with the same holes in our squad that we had last season, it could be a very long campaign. Well, I'm pleased. Pleased in the hope that we see football of the kind we played at the end of last season, not during Roy's previous tenure. Roy claims he now has a better group of players and that is what made the difference. We still need to see more really positive activity in the transfer market, but perhaps now his appointment is confirmed, he will have an input. We have a manager who is honest, loyal and committed to our club so in that we should be grateful. He also has a lovely sense of humour which you can see in the interview with Gary Neville. Quite unexpected actually. An untried foreign manager would be much more of a gamble and the likes of Brendan Rogers too expensive. It is interesting to see Paddy identified as Assistant Manager, so that bodes well for the future. Congratulations to you Roy, Paddy and Ray and we all wish you every success in 23/24.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
