Quite expensive on the Internet but it's probably worth buying.

That said, I don't see nuclear war.....For one it isn't a 'winnable' hand. The Russians would have war gamed this for years and years. Off hand they have to take us and France out as a 'hands off' message to the Americans....but the radiation factor and the 'dead hand' retaliation from somewhere in the ocean from us becomes a real reality and of course the Americans reaction then becomes extremely unpredictable..

People are calling Putin irrational, I think he's anything but that. If people actually watched his video before he invaded they would see that. Actual nuclear war makes no sense.....especially if you wage defensive war.

Cyanide would be better. As I understand it there is no way back from proper radiation poisoning, Iodine might help with a mild dose but more likely it's an attempt to make the patient feel better that something is being done.

Rather better to have both.

Though I doubt cyanide is legal....lots of other means.

I don't know how much radiation level it protects against but I think it's pretty high because I think it maximises what you body can absorb....don't know would have to look at it again.

Still probably other stuff would kill you instead.

Me & my girlfriend have agreed to take in a Ukrainian family, we have the room on our guest floor so decided to try and do what we can, all we have asked is they contribute towards the Gas/Electric, we should know a bit more in the next couple of days, genuinely have no interest taking in men running away though.

If this escalates I have a mate in rural France who said she will put my family up but I am thinking of staying behind & fighting, we're nowhere near that situation & I remain convinced this stops east of the Dnieper but its the kind of stuff floating around in the back of my mind.

I’ve been thinking many people would like to help. Maybe put up a gofundme so we can chip in to the costs you and your neighbours incur through housing strangers. I really admire you both and we would certainly do the same (providing the guests agree to become lifelong palace fans).

Where's he gone? Probably on some Russian ex pat forum giving them what for.

I'm around. Last post was just after 8 this evening. Been watching the developments and the various analysts. Not much point in any of us speculating too much until we know where these "talks" may lead. Not on any forums, other than this one, myself.

I am just very impressed by the bravery and determination of the Ukrainian people, which I find humbling. That's a spirit that Putin will find almost impossible to quell.

That alone ought to give him pause for thought. It won't of course.

The other thing I have picked up this evening is that Tucker Carlson's criticism of Ukraine as a failed democracy and his praise of Putin for being non "woke" etc etc has featured prominently on Russian TV as being the thoughts of "normal" Americans. Great when one of your own serves up propaganda to your enemy on a golden dish.

For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally.

I agree, never thought I would see TC and Diane Abbott doing the same thing but these are strange days.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

Oh come on.....let's leave all that knockabout point scoring stuff for when there's some resolution in Ukraine. Plenty of time in the aftermath for that.

Pretty much everyone dying has zero responsibility for how we got here or what's coming....when the missiles are flying no one cares about who's 'woke' or 'based'.

You would certainly hope so but that's what has been reported as being shown on Russian TV. Apparently Carlson has said much the same and that we need to set aside such comments until this is over. Nobody has told the Russians though, and that's the point. If we are hoping to isolate Putin in his home we all need to sing from the same hymn sheet and not offer him gifts like that.

There has been remarkable solidarity from all the western world and beyond, so it's a pity when anyone breaks ranks.

I never really get this point that what a few plonkers say on Hol's political forum counts, in any shape or form, to some greater need to support (insert group) or impact this or that issue. No....the audience is tiny, we give our views about A or B and let off steam...that's about it.

All I'm saying is that I'd prefer to not spend significant time arguing 'culture war' points if they are going to take us away from the daily tragedy we are seeing. That's just from an aesthetics point of view because obviously it makes no difference what we actually discuss...I mean we could shift to a discussion on Bugs Bunny's latent homosexuality or whether Hulk Hogan should really have scored more tail during his prime years and connect it in some way to this war but....there's always another thread.

Early on I talked about how critical I and many are on just how this conflict came about but as the deaths mount up it just feels inappropriate at this time.

That's very nice of you to offer maple, Looks like we're taking in two families but probably won't know more now until next week, it's definitely happening though.
