I did used to go over on the boat. Ha, yes,it could be a tad choppy to!. I remember going over about 30 years ago from Hollyhead, night crossing, it was as choppy as possible without turning the boat over! Got to Ireland, and saw on the news a bloke windsurfing in Liverpool got blown out to sea and ended up in Dublin- he was out there all night to, no idea how he did it!

It is looking like the migrants may have called for help before drowning and were refused by both countries. That would surely be against maritime law as well as appalling and unconscionable.
But happy to be put right on that.

From what I have just been able to make out, the boat may well have been in international waters. So yes, if calls for help were ignored, then we are in a different situation. It does all seem a little vague.

Again, happy to be corrected but from what I can make out, the French authorities are the ones taking the lead in terms of the criminal investigation. Map on the BBC seems to indicate the sinking took place almost half-way between the UK and France but the reports all seem to say 'just north of Calais'. A mixed picture.

It does all seem a little vague. France and England each have 12 miles of territorial waters. However the Channel is only 24 miles wide anyway so practically it cannot be separated by international waters of any substance. I think both countries would stop you in each others waters, are (or were) in partnership in defence and these matters. However, since brexit, and now with this, watch this space.

Not sure Brexit made any difference what so ever. All I do know is that photographs of French police watching on as the boat was launched does tend to indicate that at least the French knew it was in the water where as the Brits, who are willing to patrol jointly with the French but are denied, had zero idea. The people on the boat rang the French first. Who allegedly declined to help. Only then did they ring the British. Which seems to indicate to me that those on board considered the French the closer. The reports all seem to say that the boat was just north of Calais. The French are investigating it as a criminal matter (shame they never thought to do so earlier on) so it seems that the primary duty of care lay with France.

France now saying they will not accept Patel's push-back operations. Without their co-operation they cannot go ahead. To the relief of the BF staff members who are joining legal action against it.
