Sure he's a dick at times...what politician isn't? He's also said the odd spot on thing: "But anyone who believes that the eternal issue of war and peace in Europe has been permanently laid to rest could be making a monumental error. The demons haven't been banished; they are merely sleeping, as the wars in Bosnia and Kosovo have shown us." "A united Europe is our Continent's only chance to avoid falling off the world's radar. The heads of government of Germany, France and the United Kingdom also know that their voice is only heard internationally because they speak through the megaphone of the European Union".

Utter bullcrap. We are members of NATO, a nuclear power with a permanent seat on the UNSC. We have huge soft-power that projects globally (test: go to Beijing and say you are from the UK. Do the same, say you are French. Note the difference), a truly international language, with cultural ties & a legal system shared among a huge number of people. We do not need to speak through any such "EU megaphone"; if you genuinely fall for that claptrap it demonstrates your utter lack of awareness of the outside world, and our place in it. Ergo, I assume, your myopic EU fanaticism.

The UK will be fine when it eventually leaves.

Our permanent seat is already under challenge and before long will be going, going gone..we remain at the behest of our American sponsor and now stripped ofg EU support.. NATO has no international clout other than as a vehicle of US foreign policy.. We may be a nuclear power. We have been for more than 60 years. Hasn't affected the steady one way drop in our international influence,as with France (also a nuclear power) We do indeed carry an "ever shrinking" soft power (compare it globally to 20 years ago and 40 years ago)from days of Empire ...but in the world of realpolitik and the calculations of China (and yes I have been there) it counts for heading for zero.. Myopic Euro fanaticism? Utter bullcrap. Just realism is a real world of real politik. To suggest an EU of UK,France and Germany hitting in unison doesn't have more weight globally than the UK on its own is letting fantasy rule IMHO. Edited by legaleagle (04 May 2017 9.38am)

Edited by legaleagle (04 May 2017 9.38am) It is 'bullcrap', as you so charmingly put it, if you think 27 countries with different agendas and interests would ever agree on unified military action.

God, legal hates the idea of the nation state doesn't he. So much so that I think he actually believes the stuff he says...Well he wants it to be true. We have the sixth largest, sometimes fifth largest economy in the world by GDP and he talks as if we don't matter. We are ranked as the sixth most powerful military in the world and one of the few nuclear capable ones and he thinks we are going to be losing our seat at the security council. Not a fifth columnist exactly...more of a 0.5 columnist.

Your point doesn't undermine mine. Never a unified EU unified position re intervention...ermmm what was Bosnia and Kosovo then?

For a nice healthy nationalism, like I wish we had more of,see Australia. Our global "power" trajectory is downwards and has been for 70 years. We would be stronger on the future world stage as a unified bloc.Nothing you have written undermines that. Edited by legaleagle (04 May 2017 11.40am)

Well there will be consequences and a price. It would be absurd to think otherwise. But in terms of war and peace, there shouldn't be much in the way of significance. It might impact some of our defence costs and exports, as well as our defence industry options in European Markets though - which could be affected by tariffs, and trade changes.
