What you've described above is par for the course where football fans are concerned, and has been for years, exacerbated by the internet. Had a Brighton player been in the England team and put in a mediocre performance like most of those you've mentioned, you can bet your life that Palace fans would be giving him abuse.

I get that but seems to have gone up a whole new level this tournament with certain clubs fans - Social media makes it worse of course.

For what its worth when it comes to England I couldn't care what club they play for whilst we are in that tournament. - that said I would take Palace winning a trophy over England every day of the week - as its less likely to happen.

Actually thought we did well to nullify a lot of Spains attacking threats. made them look beatable. but it was disappointing to concede so early in the 2nd half.

GS showed that he can't change the game sufficiently enough to change the Result. like for like subs, and not enough of them, even when staring into defeat, too much faith in his underperforming favourites, and underutilising the bench (throughout the tournament).

This game above all others screamed for Wharton, but with no minutes in the entire tournament, I doubt even a Rice injury would have seen him introduced.

This Spain side is very similar to how We were when GS took over. national expectation was low, a team full of unblooded up and coming youngsters. goes to show what could have been under GS's reign.

Southgate is a very decent human being,he is a gentleman of articulacy who conducts himself with dignity, charm and modesty and I wish him all the very best.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hard to disagree with that Willo.

However, as an international manager, he plateau'd some time ago. He is a great organiser and turned England round. But clearly he has not got what it takes to coach a tournament winning side.

I think that we should certainly have beaten Croatia and Italy in the other two big games. Spain were the better side last night but were beatable. How many times did Pickford hit it long from goal kicks and clearances? We seem to be the only team still doing that and it gave possession away most times. No wonder we only had the ball 35% of the time. That has to be down to the coach.

The Roy analogy is valid. Having seen what Glasner has achieved for us, I believe it is time to offer Gareth heartfelt thanks and to move on to a more progressive manager. And no, I don't have a name but maybe someone like Klopp? There has to be someone out there.

Whilst i do agree with this and think southgate will walk - i cant see any logical replacements right now - we will end up with the 21s manager and people will moan.

Not going to get a top top manager as they wouldnt go near international management

The Spanish manager was the U19, U21, and U23 manager before being elevated to the top team.
He certainly had successes with the age-group squads and under his watch, Spain have won the Nations League and of course Euro 2024.

But Southgate was the same and came from the 21s... see my point here?

I think the Kane conundrum is a bit of both - fitness and a system.

When we played spain 4 years ago in the nations league away, we had rashford and Sterling running in behind which allowed kane to drop deep and play through balls and get us in behind. - we won that game and he got 3 assists.

This tournament Saka, Foden, Bellingham or whoever else it is always wants the ball to feet and we had zero runners in behind.

Having said that, he clearly wasnt 100% fit.

Watkins hardly made an impact coming on though did he, which probably speaks volumes more of the overall tactics.

Fair comment - but incidentally it was in 2018 and not 4 years ago - however you may be interested in the following summary of that game by Bill Edgar in The Times last Saturday:

"Oct 15, 2018: Nations League, Spain 2 England 3. Raheem Sterling scored twice and Marcus Rashford got the other as England led 3-0 at half-time. This match in Seville is often cited as one of England's best displays under Southgate but that is wide of the mark. While England produced a handful of slick breakaways, they also enjoyed plenty of luck as they spent most of the game on the back foot. Spain hit the woodwork and had a penalty appeal turned away. England suffered a shots deficit of 19 (24 to five) and a corner deficit of 12, both figures being by far the worst of Southgate's 101-game reign."

A win by any means is still a win, of course. However, the above reflection suggests to me that not a lot has changed.

He was never an international manager. He got the job because he worked for the FA, who were in a difficult situation.
His club record was unimpressive, and his loyalty to players and his lack of tactical awareness has cost us two finals and a semi final.
He might well be a very nice and level headed chap, but that is not what is needed to win things.
He has brought a sense of unity and calmness to the England squads and this has served us well, but there has rarely been a game in tournaments where we have beaten anyone who we shouldn't be beating.
Despite our better progress in competitions, a squad with this much quality should have won something given our relatively easy paths to the finals. In my opinion, Southgate's decisions are mostly to blame for that.

Currently the U-21 manager is Lee Carsley who's 4th in the odds behind Potter, Howe and Pochettino.
For those who like an outside bet Roy Hodgson is 150/1 and Sam Allardice 200/1. Outside bet might be a bit of an understatement.

My last word on this disappointing affair...

Noted in The Times, and no doubt elsewhere:

Including last night, the last 27 times a men's Spanish club or the men's Spain national team has been in a major final (World Cup, European Championship, Champions League, UEFA Cup/Europa League), the Spanish team - or, on a couple of occasions, one of the 2 Spanish teams - has won.

9 of those victories have been at the expense of an English club, and obviously now 1 of them is at the expense of the England team.

Imagine that! As a Spaniard, every time you sit down to watch a Spanish team in a final, you have no doubt that they are going to win

When one examines the club record of the Spanish manager, it is also far from impressive.
Prior to being appointed Spain's U19 manager he was dismissed by Alaves after about 3 months at the helm.Previous to that he was manager of Athletic Bilbao 'B' where his win percentage over 114 games was less than 30%.
