We all knew was going to happen and tbh it just goes to show what a sh*t show we are.

I strongly disagree.

We fall in the category of having not wowed the world by doing what so many have tried and a very, very few number of clubs have achieved but equally managing to punch above our weight a lot longer than most other clubs, including those bigger than us, have.

Challenging for Europe, a circa 50k seater stadium and a cup or two is the dream however many have busted trying to get there quickly and now languish outside the Prem. We have a Chairman who is a contextual pauper, one of the smaller and more rickety grounds, nearly went completely bust a decade and half ago plus we've been desperately clawing for survival the vast majority of the past decade, again as many others have and failed in doing, but we achieved that.

I don't deny anyone the dreams or aspirations (otherwise what's the point in being a football fan quite frankly) as well as the right to air their views on how things should be done, should of been done and what our direction of travel should be, from long term to match day team sheets.

Short term wants and longer term goals can exist together however and I would suggest appreciating the wider view of things, from the past to the future, is necessary alongside a want for 'x' player(s) in the transfer window, a manager who reflects some ambition, perhaps something to cheer beyond survival and hope beyond a single season.

Expecting, demanding or throwing a wobbly because all these things don't come at once or quickly is not something I feel obliged to vehemently defend the club from but something I do view as a bit silly, to say the least.

I too want an inspiring manager (not a dig at Roy), signings in the market, progress on the stadium and some silverware, even any micky mouse cup, and maintain the right to rant about this on any isolated occasion. My acknowledgement of the reality of our situation though is something which I can give a few thoughts to however and chill out once the initial emotion passes.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Wasn’t Rodgers on something like 12 million a year at Leicester and Potter probably something similar at Chelsea. We can’t afford these managers no matter how much we may desire them.

When Roy was last manager we had no proper investment on players, the defence and midfield were painfully slow and he knew it, that’s why he played a defensive, low block. Now we are on the right track, buying good young players and this is how it has to continue. The money bounded about by literally all the other teams is obscene. Let’s carry on doing our thing, it’s exciting and working!

This is true. Some on here go on about the boring, but what you highlight is Hodgsons adaptability , unlike so many managers he will adapt the team to suit its actual strengths.
So many sides go down simply because they don’t change styles, adapt when needed.
If the entertaining football is just not working, then if you want to stay in the division you have to know how to play on the back foot, boring maybe but true.
We do now have a much better progressive squad, but the squad will always have to know how to dig in when needed, Hodgson is as good as anyone at making sure that’s the case.
Leicester, went down, because they couldn’t adapt , good footballing side ,not clicking, couldn’t adapt, if you look at relegations past it’s a common factor.

All very true, the need to adapt and change when necessary.
This process appears to be beyond many managers, notably Patrick Vieira as a case in point.

For the first time in the Prem that I can remember, at least at the start of the transfer window, if all the teams stay as they are, with the managers they have, I would be confident that we would achieve at least a mid-table finish. As a long-term 'beaten up' pessimistic Palace fan this the first year I have not felt dread at the season before us. For me this is really good progress and now we just need to get the new stand built and I will feel that the long run in this division winning only half a dozen games a year has been worth it.

Re-appointing Roy has done that for me.

I'm feeling the same but, obviously, we're both forgetting how Palace can bite you on the arse.

The one thing we'll never know until the season gets going is whether Roy will approach a full season differently to a short-term rescue job. Whatever we want to say about Vieira he'd already secured enough points to mean Roy only needed a few wins to secure safety meaning the job was all but done within a few games and the pressure was off. Obviously the hope is he'll continue to show faith in the strength of our attacking players and not burden them with too many defensive responsibilities and we'll play on the front foot in games where we're not the complete underdog.

I shall be pleased if Roy stays. But, there is a but, and it has to do with the fact that I am the same age as Roy and I suffer from Oldie conditions, i.e.
1 - I can walk from one room into another and then find I have completely forgotten why I have done so.
2 - I think I am still 35.
3 - I have been logging on to HOL for years and only just today I have worked out there is a separate 'Palace Talk' tab, so I can avoid all the boring political rant posts and concentrate on important stuff.
4 - I still fancy Helen Shapiro.

Is Roy is the same? Should this be a worry?

I enjoyed reading that thanks for posting

I would suggest Roy may join you in three of those conditions however his mental faculty does not seem to have diminished even slightly with his age.

If he starts wearing a Helen Shapiro T-shirt instead of his trademark whistle on the touchline I think questions will be asked however...

Roy for a year is fine. If he's healthy enough then we could do an awful lot worse, and often have done. There's rarely any such thing as a manager for the long term anyway.

I'm not sure I agree with those who say we got a 'new and exciting version' of Roy last season. He did a good job of course, but a leopard doesn't change its spots, especially after all those years. I think Roy's methods always stay much the same but produce different outcomes depending on the strength of the opponent, key circumstances going our way, and the ability and form of his players.

We ended the season with a run of easier games, got a bit of new-manager bounce (one or two of the players did seem a bit fed up with Vieria), and once we got a couple of results there was never any threat of relegation to hinder confidence and cause nerves.

Olise and Eze hit form at the same time and enjoyed pressure-free football in the sun, something you sometimes get when the end of the season rolls into view. They grabbed headlines and took us to a different level for a bit, but the test is whether they can maintain it through a season. Neither has managed it yet.

If Olise and Eze kick on then I imagine we will play a bit like the team Roy had in 2017-18, with Loftus-Cheek, Zaha, McArthur, Townsend, etc all in very good form - i.e a team in which flair players are allowed to play, but must do their defensive work first and foremost.

It'll be fine.

The sensible businessman will be doing all he can to protect his asset and start looking NOW. If due dilligence as well as getting the right fit in terms of character and someone who understands Palace and the club's culture and history takes a long time he has just bought himself a year.
Lets hope he uses that year to get it done.
