But cultures are NOT mixing are they? That's the problem. Your comments are as simplistic as any from the BNP. The reality is far more complicated. Multi-culturalism becomes a problem when communities don't mix, when they consider themselves separate and apart from the main society. No doubt you would pin the blame for this on racism etc. But part of the blame must lie with the communities themselves. On the contrary I agree 100%. It takes both sides to break apart, and both sides to come together.

The diffrence between multi-culturalism and muli-ethnicity has become confused. It's the responsibility of immigrants to integrate with the host culture - the refusal to integrate shows a complete lack of respect to the country that's taken them in.

This post has been merged from a topic called '2 minute silence at 12pm - don't forget!' by Moose Just had ours, bell went and we all scurried outside, I was surprised at how many people were actualy out on addiscoombe road. About 70 people from my office and loads more from other places. the only sound was a police car speeeding past.
R.I.P all those who lost their lives last friday. Whoever did this, You are cowardly to do so. Your skum!

Just been outside for the 2 minute silence (City Road, EC1) and I have to sya, that's the most impressive I've ever seen - no traffic moving, both sides of the street full to overflowing with people who left their places of work. Very moving (not sure it helps at all, but still a moving experience)

Amazing in Parliament Square - MPs, couriers, cab drivers, tourists, office workers. All started clapping at the end- quality. Moments like that realise how much better things are when people come together in solidarity.

This post has been merged from a topic called '2 minute silence at 12pm - don't forget!' by Moose Most people from my office went outside ... there was a bit of mass confusion as some people claimed it was 12 o clock now ... it was settled when the bells of a nearby church rang ... only things that seemed to move were foreign lorries/coaches. We all observed a bus driver refusing to let someone on as the driver wanted to observe the silence - some people (this bus passenger) have NO respect!!
They say hard work never hurt anyone ... but why take a chance? |

I went out at about 11.40 and wandered up to Aldgate. I signed the book of condolence there and browsed through all the tributes and flowers laid there by people from all around the world. I was part of a crowd ushered onto the steps in front of St. Botolph's Church and ended up being stood behind the Commissioner of the City Police and Tim O'Toole, the boss of London Underground. By noon, there were thousands of people lining the streets around the Aldgate one way system. The 2 minutes' silence was observed beautifully, with traffic at a standstill, engines turned off. The hymn Abide With Me was sung - that hymn is an emotional one at the best of times, and I saw people openly crying during the rendition. The response of Londoners, of all colours and creeds was plain for all to see. We will not be beaten, we will not be afraid, and we will carry on as we always have, no matter what these scum throw at us. It was truly inspiring. Edited by Moose (14 Jul 2005 12:18pm)
