It was a similar situation last year, this year there is the added loss of Wilf. Last year nothing was done until January . We hoped to progress from a good previous season but that took the spark out of the side. And couldn’t have helped Viera, whether you think he could ,should have done better. As it is I shouldn’t think they will not recruit, but then I thought that last year and nothing happened. Someone has said this is going to be ROY make do part two, and right now they could be right.

Come on YT, you are arguing semantics here. We never had the players before to do this however it has started with AWB and we now have Olise, Eze, Doucoure, Guehi, Andersen and Johnstone, all worth way more than their acquisition cost. We had to start somewhere with a buy low, sell high policy and it looks like it is now moving in the right direction. This is what I meant in my post above; Parish now finds himself at that point where he himself stated he wanted to be as he opened the academy. We now have a set of valuable players who, through their performances, are gathering attention from moneybags clubs. Clearly we need to be careful how we manage the situation, I look at the likes of Leicester and Southampton and what happened to them as they diminished the quality of their squads without adequate replacements.

In specific terms it wasn’t nothing done, but in terms of what was needed it came close. Doucoure , a very big plus in ability terms , but he couldn’t make up for losing both Gallagher, and Kouyate . At the same time full backs were called for , and letting Benteke go did nothing for the striker situation.

I agree, hopefully by September 1st some of these glaring deficiencies will have been addressed, but this is Palace....

I’ve never invested much in thoughts of Everton fans and I’m disinclined to now. That club has been a shambles for a number of years now and I’d suggest not conducive to getting the best out of anybody. In any instance, if a laugh is to be had in football atm it’s Tottenham’s reported interest in signing Mbappe. My ribs did actually hurt. My neighbour who played for Everton many many moons ago and shares your view of the current state of affairs there chuckled when I reported the Grey to Palace rumour to him. But then he looked thoughtful and remarked he did actually look like as though he could be quite a decent player but he needed other quick forwards round him and suggested he could do very well in Palace's front line these days.

I must be a minority, but I love the way the club is run. Parish is, IMO, smarter than the money bags owners of other clubs our size in the division. I’m from the midlands, and I’ve been telling friends for a couple of years now, that Wolves are going to fall apart. Where we spend only what we can, Wolves have spent lavishly. £40m isn’t a high price to them. But this season, they have sold £80m worth of players, and still need to sell more to bring players in. That’s simply down to FFP forcing their hand. We have never been in that situation. It used to hurt me to watch a club like Wolves come up from the championship and immediately look better than us, and they did very well for a short period, but spending like that, it’s not sustainable. Now they are in big trouble. They looked a poor side last year, and I’d have them tipped for another bad season ahead. We rebuilt the squad for £70m not long ago. That’s the sort of money that gets you two good players in this current market. I think given the money available, it’s remarkable to still see us competing in the prem. Id love to have seen a new right back last season. But I’d argue that if the prices being quoted are not good value, if these players don’t represent a £20m improvement over what we have, then the club has likely decided to bide their time. It’s that sort of attitude that means we don’t have to accept low offers for our true stars.

To be more positive, I think if we signed Franca and/or Gray and kept hold of everyone else then I think we're fine. If we could sign a more productive striker as well then I see no reason why we couldn't make a stronger push for the top 10. Based on current rumours I'm more concerned about losing players than signing them as potential incomings do not seem to be of the same level as the potential outgoings (unless anyone is taking the Laporte rumours seriously).

We are at the stage however, that we can, and need to, sell one and buy 2. so FFP doesn't cripple up like it did when we bouught Benteke and Sakho

I think getting players in is a little more complicated than we think, if, and if we sell Andersen or Guehi before the window closes, we are looking at the 20/30m players, if nobody is sold we are looking at maybe a 12/15m player and a loan or two, there is no point in buying Gray, if you have more money, then you go for a Sarr/Gnonto, tricky if you dont know if a 70m bid is about to come in.

I just can't take any mention of FFP seriously. Quite clearly nor do most of the owners of clubs. I find the excuse of FFP only arises when the club has run out of money. It seems more a tool to fool fans, than to regulate football. Edited by ASCPFC (26 Jul 2023 2.47pm)
