That’s it, you carry on spending your life in that way. Bitterness and blame is by far the best way to burn off your one and only all too short life. I am sure there is no fun to be had knocking about with bloomin foreigners. It's all way over your head Maple....I don't expect you to understand.

Though if we do link a few things together in this thread. Quotes from WE “I worked most of my life in the food industry, some of it at a senior (MD) level” “I owned a business and I employed people” It couldn’t be that you used cheap migrant labour in Wisbech could it and that’s why you are so keen? Hit retirement age and it becomes a strange place, that you escape from and look down on from your idyllic Cornish retirement home. It’s not so much the message you convey. It’s the sanctimonious way you spout things and your belief your s*** smells sweeter than anyone else’s. But back to the topic Trump’s a one dimensional, dogmatic, seriously flawed individual who is good at getting his message across to his suppporters. Biden is an old man who shouldn’t be anywhere near an election. It really is like deciding which limb you would like to lose. It is interesting though that you advocate our MP’s using their judgement as “that’s what they are elected for” yet the President of the US isn’t allowed to exercise his in your eyes - because you view the world through a different lens. As people neither Trump nor Biden are particularly worthy of respect, but it’s fundamental to respect the position of President, even if you don’t agree with the message. I’ve always subscribed to the mantra “vote for those who will do you the least harm”. I’m not going to understand how a miner who was laid off in the 1980’s feels, but nor is he going to understand my position. Your view is entirely clouded. born out of your generation, class and experiences. I’m 40 years old and self employed. My concerns are entirely different to someone who is 76 and retired in a Cornish town. I respect you for getting that and what you have achieved, but please stop telling everyone else how we should feel and act.

Thomas Clarkson was one of the main campaigners responsible for the passing of the Slave Trade Act of 1807 which ended the British trade in slaves. Later on of course the British would enforce this throughout its empire. He was born in Wisbech and there is a big statue of him close to the town centre. Wisbech also has many examples of old well built housing alongside its river having been a rich port then....the image provided shows the statue and examples of old...I believe Georgian housing. There are also several old rich merchant houses that allow viewing that get tourist interest. Oh I am well aware of Thomas Clarkson and his statue. I walked often past it on my way to the town centre. I never though ever noticed any tourists there. I have often wondered if you worked at the school named after him and how ironic that might be if true, given your comparative characters. I am also aware of the town's history but not of any tourist interest in it. We get more than our fair share of tourists here. Would you like me to divert a few to you? Maybe run tours for special interest groups, like people interested in masochism or oddball characters? I can think of three that go straight on the list. Tony Martin, Victoria Gillick and a certain member of this website.

True. There are actually some nice people there. Mostly those who have arrived from other parts of Europe to work in the food factories and the farms, of which there are many. They definitely improved things during the time I was there. Until then it had the reputation of being a rather isolated and inhospitable place. I made many more friends among the newcomers, especially the Poles and Latvians than I did among the indigenous people. Why doesn’t that surprise us! So everyone is not equal in your world after all!!

Presumably employed many of them, still they tend to be cheaper, helps you in retirement

I suppose I should be flattered by the interest, but as there a few incorrect assumptions thought I would correct them. Originally posted by robdave2k

Hit retirement age and it becomes a strange place, that you escape from and look down on from your idyllic Cornish retirement home. I did own a business but it was unconnected to the food industry. None of my staff were immigrants, although many of the customers were. Labour rates are low in Wisbech. It's an officially deprived area. It’s not so much the message you convey. It’s the sanctimonious way you spout things and your belief your s*** smells sweeter than anyone else’s. I just say things as I see them. You aren't obliged to read them. But back to the topic Trump’s a one dimensional, dogmatic, seriously flawed individual who is good at getting his message across to his suppporters. Does he have "a message"? It seems to me that everything he does is about him. Biden is an old man who shouldn’t be anywhere near an election. Just a mo! Biden is only a year older than me, and I am still pretty active and reject any concept of being an "old man". Trump is only 3 years younger but obese. So probably less suitable based only on age. Try reading this:-https://www.forbes.com/sites/alisondurkee/2020/09/25/trump-biden-age-study-super-agers-health/
Our MPs act collectively. Just as the US Congress does. Trump acts individually, more as a dictator does. He is attempting to weaken congressional oversight and starting to direct and threaten his AG. Trump wasn't even elected via a popular vote! As people neither Trump nor Biden are particularly worthy of respect, but it’s fundamental to respect the position of President, even if you don’t agree with the message. I agree. Respecting the Presidency is essential. Which is why, when an incumbent turns out to be criminally corrupt, effective oversight exists to protect it. I’ve always subscribed to the mantra “vote for those who will do you the least harm”. I’m not going to understand how a miner who was laid off in the 1980’s feels, but nor is he going to understand my position. If my arguments change yours that's fine but at the end of the day they are yours and not mine. We each have a vote.
