I don't like the statue of bomber Harris in central London...and he killed far more than this centuries old figure.....Regardless I would be angry if it was removed like this. This is history and the fact that the mob was allowed to do this within a functioning democracy is unacceptable. People should be sacked.

Again, don’t disagree with the point around criminality It’s the assertion that this kind of thing somehow leads to more than just a statue being removed. The fact is the same whether done by mob or vote. Either way, the history is still there. Not going anywhere anytime soon

The absurdity of destroying a statue for the stated reasons is mindboggling as is the logic of anyone trying to condone the act.

I feel that arguing with minds such as these is becoming a waste of time that would be better spent in other ways. Still, it beats decorating.

If it'd been a statue of a paedophile and child murderer, we wouldn't get uppity about 'vandalism', right?

It's still an attack on the historical record. Anyway there are plenty of tweets going around calling for Churchill next. I wouldn't be surprised to see it being guarded......then again perhaps I should be. Edited by Stirlingsays (07 Jun 2020 8.25pm)

Like, also, the idea that that it's wrong for the public to remove a piece of public property seems contradictory. It was in a public space. The public rose up and took it down. Awesome. Taking ownership of the city.

I have to admit I do find it all a bit strange . Britain has a history which meant we prospered and made our selves better using slaves. Then millions of people from around the world wanted to move to Britain knowing full well the history but turned a blind eye. Millions of people moved here yet we keep getting told we are a racist country. We are told black people have to work harder, there is un conscious bias, yet they are still coming to Britain. Do black people not see the hipocracy in all this. Edited by dannyboy1978 (07 Jun 2020 8.30pm)

To be honest, I can't believe we are having a discussion about the validity of a mob of demonstrators tearing down a statue. They took down the statue of a man who partook in, and profited from one of the most abhorrent practices in human history. The statue not being there doesn't erase or revise what he did, but it won't be a constant reminder to the Bristol black community of the oppression and murder that he carried out on their ancestors. I'm shocked you find this piece of vandalism, which harmed no one, more contentious than anything I've just discussed.
