One prediction for the tournament, within a few circles beyond just 'England fans', was that we were favourites. This was off the back of the squad we have and the level at which our players compete and perform, not blind ignorance or optimism. The performances of England have however failed to reflect the very legitimate optimism and perhaps expectation of many, albeit the results have worked out perfectly. This squad is far superior to any I can remember going back and there is an element of 'luck' or serendipity in where we find ourselves now. The suggestion that a world class group of players, with a bit of luck, has managed to stumble through to the final in spite of a pretty average manager has more weight than suggesting it was all planned, orchestrated and executed by a tactical genius. I'd argue so anyway and haven't seen anything to convince me otherwise. I'm minded not to go too far to an extreme with either of those stances and just enjoy where we are right now. I feel like we can certainly beat the Spanish but I'm not relying on a 'Southgate masterclass' to be the decisive factor, I'm more looking toward the players in the team and a bit of luck on our side. If Southgate comes out at some point in the future and says 'this was my plan all along etc.' and is able to very specifically outline why things have played out as they have, I'd very much claim complete ignorance and hail him a genius. I highly doubt that though. Come on England! Didn’t get the luck and looked intimidated by the Spanish from the get go. They were far tactically superior and looked in control of the game. I suspect you need the right manager to get you over the line and Southgate is not that. It doesn’t take away from the job he’s done as that’s two finals now however both of which I feel we needed a manager who knows how to win things and have lacked it. No idea who I’d replace him with though!
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

At least our players survive uninjured.

Poor throughout the tournament. We didn't play a really good side until the final, and won through with a few moments of individual skill. Southgate is clueless. He picked the wrong side tonight. Kane has done nothing, Foden has been ineffectual and Rice and Bellingham have been bang average. He should have started Watkins and Palmer tonight. Eze and Wharton were completely wasted. Aside from that, our passing was slow and negative. Southgate needs to go now. We need a better coach.

Bugger. One day we'll beat someone we shouldn't. Annoyingly for a little while I thought it'd be tonight.

In the final analysis, England were beaten by much the better team.

I just wish we would have seen a cameo appearance by Wharton.

though it has to be said that there were 4/5 players out there tonight that were well below par . You have to turn up in a final .

Held our own for 45mins.. gave GD vindication that system was working. Another 'valiant' defeat.
