I don't hate Roy Hodgson, I actually back him as Palace's manager and think he's the right man for the job given the circumstances. I've commented previously on how the club is run, and how RH can be one dimensional. He hits his targets and has found his level. I challenged the believe that he was a successful England manager. He wasn't. He was a disaster for the (as yet) unchallenged facts: Harry Kane on corners
Chief football writer...... The ultimate responsibility lies with the manager but, make no mistake, he was badly let down by players capable of so much better - not just on this black night for English sport but throughout Euro 2016. Hart has had a nightmare tournament, young hopes such as Harry Kane and Dele Alli failed to live up to their performances last season, and captain Rooney, who had been England's best player up until this game, chose this night to give one of his worst performances in an international. England were shown up by the work-rate, desire and sheer physical commitment of their counterparts. Yes, Hodgson will take the blame and has paid the price but these highly paid Premier League players should not escape criticism. ..calm down ChrisGC!

Agree with all of that, not sure how it proves I'm incorrect about RH. Edited by ChrisGC (02 Jan 2019 7.09pm)

The corner taking thing was a bit silly, but there's a lot to say about camaraderie and this helped Iceland hugely as it did with Southgate's campaign.

Edited by ChrisGC (02 Jan 2019 7.09pm) You can understand that the manager informs the players what to do on the pitch and although the corner taking was silly Rooney did mention he stepped in and took lots of them, which indicates nicely that in the end it's the players on the pitch that decide the managers outcome.

That would wash if it was over the course of one game... It wasn't, Kane did it in a couple of matches at least. Therefore, either it was an endorsed action or instructions were being ignored. Both signs of poor management.

Both signs of poor management. You have to also include that England had other players in the box to make a nuisance of themselves in corner situations as we did very successfully with Southgate ..Kane wouldn't be the only threat but I do agree it was daft and because we lost it looked extremely daft, but the end result wasn't because Kane took some corners, but because over the course of the game Iceland had more fight in them, which comes down to the players on the pitch not the manager.

I see what you're saying, fair enough. Kane on corners though... The trump card for all RH debates. Gets worse the more you think about it lol

Give over, pure whataboutary. Statistics can be twisted to prove any point, no matter how ridiculous: 73% of people know that :-) The majority of those games were against dogs' dinner teams like San Marino or whoever. I'd be confident that I could round up a few of the lads and manage a pub team to victory. Ramsey et al didn't have these rounds and rounds of lip-service games. Their stats might look worse, but are comparatively much better pound for pound. By your logic, Alardyce is the greatest England manager of all time, 100% record after all... Hodgson was well and truly found out and the only stats that reflect his time in charge are: Iceland result.
