Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (07 Jun 2020 7.13pm) mmmmm I’m not sure this is as controversial as you’re making out Criminal act aside, no one seems to be saying ‘erase history’ - or that the simple act of removing a slave traders statue, seemingly a symbol of celebration of murder and tyranny, equals that? There are plenty of celebrated and also controversial and horrendous historical figures that don’t have statues and are heavily prominent in written and taught history. They don’t have statues. Does that mean they’re erased from history? Bit of a silly point. Not sure I get the argument As for Churchill - I’m not sure that statue will be pulled down anytime soon. He should be remembered and revered with a statue but he’s not as squeaky clean and good ol England as some might like to make out.

If we tore down the statues of every human being responsible for the deaths of thousands of human beings......We wouldn't have many left. Feck these people and their mob rule. Edited by Stirlingsays (07 Jun 2020 7.52pm)

Who else shall we destroy and deface? I mean, I'm sure there are a host of people who are offensive to somebody. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (07 Jun 2020 7.53pm)

Which is nonsense and smacks of generalism simply to raise an emotive point (again) History is not defined by statues. In fact, I’d wager I’d be more likely to find out about this odious character through literature and study than stopping and reading his plinth. Dross

Churchill is worth spilling blood over.

Edited by Stirlingsays (07 Jun 2020 7.52pm) Yeah, but that’s not what is happening, is it. I’m fully aware of other incidents like this in the recent past - and agin while I don’t agree with the criminality of it to me it’s no different to changing who ends up on the front of the new £20 notes. Don’t see why people place so much premium on a lump of bronze I suspect you’re implying that this is the beginning of a slippery slope where textbooks get rewritten or erased and people get airbrushed out of history etc etc Can’t see that myself, find it a bit silly. However the west has been doing that in regard to the origin of mathematics, science and plenty of other things since day dot so equally nothing is beyond the wit of man However I’d think these ‘leftists’ would more likely want to surface these people as examples of what not to do rather than erase them from history completely.

Edited by Stirlingsays (07 Jun 2020 7.52pm) I'm worried for the Colosseum in Rome. Imagine how many people have ancestors ended up in there. In fact the whole Western World was built on slavery apparently so...

This is history and the fact that the mob was allowed to do this within a functioning democracy is unacceptable. People should be sacked.
