Apparently the Desert Rats are withdrawing from Basra after meeting heavy resistance.

See? A quick easy war, minimum casualties. My arse.

you almost seem happy about this....

Not sure how you got that idea, not even a smiley face in there. I am happy to the extent that it removes British soldiers from a harmful position, though.

This is quite helpful

Indicates that tensions might be growing between the States and Russia though!

I assume you're referring to

Quote The United States has "credible evidence that Russian companies have provided assistance and prohibited hardware to the Iraqi regime," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer says.

... I shouldn't worry mate, the Yanks (and Brits) sold just as much to them, so we'd hardly shout too much about it. Unless we're really stupid, Ari!

Yeah I know! But most Americans don't!

And they aren't willing to admit it either. Plus they are looking for reasons to discredit the Security Council members who were not willing to vote in favour of them

But starting to bandy around "evidence" that Russia has been arming Iraq is only gonna cause trouble!

Lets be honest here Bexter. Who else can we blame for them driving off like that?? Who ordered them to do it?? They knew the risks of doing such a thing, and unfortunatly suffered the consequences of taking such a risk. This is a war zone for f*** sake, not a paintballing session. I know it's easy to blame the Americans for just about all the british fatalities so far, but on this occasion he took his job too far.

In fairness, paintballing really hurts.

I think Keith Murray said it best when he rapped

I'm sure you'll agree.

Apparently we are today claiming (again) to have secured Umm Qasr, the deep-water port near the Kuwaiti border. Let's see if they got it right this time, I hope so.

Basra has been recategorised as a military target, which is a worry considering the British losses there already. Presumably now there's no chance we will pass it by, but will get bogged down in street fighting from now on.

This war just keeps getting grimmer, and keeps looking like a bigger and bigger mistake.

Yeah, a couple of days ago the "allies" would have had us believe that they would be in Baghdad by now. It's all going tits up, but i can't see neither Bush nor Blair backing down even one inch. I really think that Blair wishes he could turn back the clock. He's shafted us all basically.

At the risk of being labelled as smug (Heaven forfend!) I should point out that many (ie MILLIONS) of us have been pointing this out from well before this stupid war started.

How anyone could seriously kid themselves into thinking that this would be a walkover, that casualties would be minimal, and (most laughably) that we'd be welcomed as liberators, I have no idea.

We haven't even begun to see the worst of this war yet... only now are we reaching the centre of Iraq, we have Baghdad, Tikrit and Mosul to come yet... and we haven't even taken Basra yet.

But Tony knows best.

He was the smuggest b****** of them all before it started, telling us all to trust him, he's seen the evidence, etc, etc.

He's probably already working on distancing himself from the whole thing. Eventually, the history books will no doubt say that he was against us getting involved in the first place.

Here's the latest from Iraq from the Channel 4 Newsroom.

Battle for Baghdad:
===================
In Central Iraq, the advance towards the capital by coalition troops has intensified. As explosions are heard in Baghdad, American and British troops are now massing some 60 miles outside the capital city. They are fast approaching the so called 'Red Zone' - the first Iraqi line of defence of their capital city. And further south - U.S. Marines have crossed the Euphrates canal at Nassiriya opening up a supply route. Sandstorms hit Najaf where the Iraqi's CLAIM to have inflicted heavy losses on coalition forces. And in Kerbala where two US pilots have already been taken prisoner US Apache helicopters have had to withdraw.

Southern situation:
===================
Its the situation in the South, this lunchtime, which poses the immediate problem for coalition troops. And a reminder today of the British cost. The Ministry of Defence has named the soldier who died yesterday during rioting near Basra. He was Sergeant Steven Mark Roberts, of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment. In Basra, Iraqi tanks have left the city to meet the fire of coalition forces. The city is now an official military target. There's a humanitarian crisis with no water or electricity supplies since Friday. The British commander at Umm Qasr says the port town is now 'safe and open'. He promised the first ship of humanitarian aid within 2 days. Also today comes news of the second UK Combat death near Zubayr. The un-named soldier was from the first Battalion The Black Watch.

In the North:
=============
Elsewhere, coalition attacks on Iraqi positions in the North appeared to be intensifying. Overnight, fighter jets blasted Iraqi positions near the cities of Mosul and Kirkuk. And French television showed pictures of what it claimed were US special forces operating in the Kurdish-controlled area of Northern Iraq.
