no player wants to leave prematurely or get knocked out not playing to their strengths, it must be very infuriating for players that play at a high level to be in this predicament with England.. to me, the joy of Euro 96, France 98 was peak... it's never really found its form for me since..
This was once a quality forum.... |

Kane is right about the pundits. The way that Shearer and Lineker bang on you'd think that they'd actually won something with England. Shearer was in dreadful form going into Euro 96 if I remember rightly.

And there are loads. Starting and ending with Southgate.

It is crazy, for a change, how right I and many others on here have been about the problems in the England midfield BEFORE a ball was kicked in the Euros. Probably there is another group on Blackburn chat rooms who are saying exactly the same. Because I am not an expert football strategist. Far from it. But once you have spent some time watching Adam Wharton it just becomes so obvious he is the missing piece. There has never been a more perfect fit of attributes of a midfielder of Adam and what England needs. Except one. Experience. And that is what Southgate prizes above almost everything else. Have you played big games for big clubs? Like that is the only answer. And we have seen it clearly over the last three games it is obviously NOT the answer. Rice, Mainoo and Gallagher. Great talents. Great midfielders. Good guys actually. But they all are at their best in the attacking midfield role. Only Adam Wharton has any natural balance in his midfield abilities. Which are phenomenal by the way. I'll leave you with this quote from the Guardian today about Gallagher (whose talents we all totally appreciate at Palace): "Gallagher produced one of the most edgy, weird, fretful performances you’re likely to see at this level. It took him 10 minutes 48 seconds to touch the ball. Here is a list of things he did before he touched the ball. He fouled someone. He fell over. He stood in a strange non-position. By the end of his 45 minutes he had one clearance, two fouls, 13 passes, all of them short and basically just a nervous tic, shuttling the ball away." Edited by mileend (26 Jun 2024 9.58am)

I'm reaching a point now where I almost don't want Wharton to play a part in this tournament and potentially have his confidence damaged by this absolute clusterf***. Southgate is utterly useless and needs to go as soon as the tournament is over. Better for Wharton to start his England career properly under a new manager and less pressure. We are miraculously favourites to win the entire thing once again, owing to the fact that Spain, Germany, France and Portugal have all ended up in the opposite side of the draw meaning our route to the final couldn't be easier in theory. Once again Southgate has been incredibly lucky with his route in the tournament and if he gets us to the semi-finals or beyond it is by luck and not judgement.

These players need a verbal kicking, Indeed however before the tournament he was getting pelters so I thought he might have a bit of sympathy. "Shearer had not scored in 12 games in the 21 months prior,[15] and even his overall goalscoring record for England did not look too impressive so far, with five goals in 23 games.[82] However, he found the net in the 22nd minute of the first game, against Switzerland.[83] Scoring once in the following game against Scotland and twice in a 4–1 win over the Netherlands,[83] Shearer helped England to progress to the next stage in front of their own fans in Wembley"

Lets face it, the team that played yesterday with the subs maybe switching for first teamers, is all we will see for England (other than maybe Shaw if he is healthy). We will not see Eze or Wharton (or Henderson) getting any minutes on the pitch, bar a couple of injuries. Same goes for Toney, Watkins and other non-Palace not-used subs.

Well, TAA and Gallagher have played themselves out of partnering Rice but there are still Mainoo and Bellingham dropping back from No. 10, ahead of him so I think there is little chance of him getting minutes. His interview, which I read as basically telling Southgate to play him, may not have gone down well I think the only chance he will he gets is if Mainoo has a stinker and we are down at halftime because the Dutch, for example, are running rampant in midfield
