I see Germany having problems with the number 44 on their new shirts as it looks like the SS logo. I can actually understand why there are problems over this. There is still in Germany a large amount of national collective guilt and deep shame over their country's actions before and during WW2, so anything looking remotely like the symbol of the SS on their national team's shirt is bound to cause upset.

It's laughable that grown ups are bothered by a number that looks a little bit, but not that much like SS. Pathetic in fact. This is driven by professional outrage merchants and corporations running scared of tarnishing their reputations and damaging their profits.

I’ve only just read this story and the comments that followed it as it appeared pretty irrelevant anyway. Now I have I must say I am totally disgusted. Not with the idea of “the flag being changed”, because it hasn’t. A few pieces of merchandise are being marketed, loosely based on the appearance of the flag, but not the flag itself or, even, the uniforms the team will wear. No, what disgusts me is yet another attempt by contemptuous newspapers and TV propaganda stations to whip up false sentiment with a fake story. That some people fall for it hook line and sinker is very sad. If it upsets you don’t buy the merchandise. It’s probably not aimed at you in the first place. Others might like it.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

The flag of St George is a Red Cross on a white background. Why tamper with it? The Union flag is red white and blue, why tamper with it. I have never bought any of the merchandise but it’s not a false story or propaganda ( how you use this word is bizarre) is it?

Out of interest, are you equally disgusted by the outrage with the German kits and the actions taken? It's very interesting these two stories have emerged simultaneously.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

I have never bought any of the merchandise but it’s not a false story or propaganda ( how you use this word is bizarre) is it? It just isn’t though. No one is tampering with any flag. The flags that will fly remain untouched. No one is sticking labels on merchandise and saying they are flags. This is somebody designing merchandise. Nothing more. That they use a design reference to create a link is often done. I am sure Mary Quant’s stuff back in the 60s used such references but they weren’t flags either. Unless there is a patent, or some other protective restriction over the design then this is a fuss about nothing at all. That the merchandise exists isn’t fake, but the furore is and those who try to whip up false sentiment are indeed spreading propaganda.

Completely different. If the original melody of the national anthem was given offensive words and a new arrangement then there would be justification for upset. No one is changing a flag! They are marketing clothes and merchandise. It’s a commercial world. Don’t buy it.
