Given the limitations of our current squad I am surprised we never start both Edouard and Mateta up front. They both look slightly lost as a lone striker playing a version of 4-5-1, and the few times I've seen them play together they've looked like they have an understanding between them and offer more outlets to those in midfield for getting the ball up the pitch. We might let in a few more if you sacrificed one defensive midfielder (Richards ideally, who, poor lad, looks very lost in midfield) to play the two of them up front, but I for one think we'd win more games with them both up on the pitch.

I wouldn’t be averse to starting them together in some games or for using them together for periods of games.
I suppose to Roy’s mind it could jeopardise his beloved team shape, but sometimes it’s worth taking a few risks in particular when performances and results are poor.

On the subject of Mateta, if Edouard starts tomorrow it may indicate there is some truth to the rumours of Mateta’s potential departure.
If there’s a likely move afoot on the following deadline day I don’t see how he can be in the right state of mind to start .

Indeed.

I think most of us would consider £20mil for JPM representative of good business however are probably imagining that money will be used to buy a better/more suitable player to replace him. My doubting of that is high, we're still on course to sign nobody despite our troubles...

For £20m I'd drive him to Leverkusen myself!

Even for £15 million I'd sub his air-fare. Has no future with us, don't know what we saw in him. Hustle and bustle but little skill or heading ability.

Must be someone in the U21s who could perform better (when the manager retires obviously) or now in the Championship.

I have thought about the two playing together and then lumping on at the bookies for relegation.

Despite our differing opinions on JPM, it is fair to say that if we sold him then we would not buy a replacement and then we would be in an even worse position.
I reckon a decent run will see him do a good job for us with the right service.
If Edouard starts tonight then that says more about Roy than Edouard.

He disappears in games, but not as much as Edouard, whose name wasn’t even mentioned in the Arsenal game he was that bad! If Mateta could win a header then we might have a player, but let’s be honest we have two duds!

For £20m we should definitely be selling......but only if we have a replacement lined up!

and lets face it, our usual speed at signing players in positions we need is 12-18 months

I think it would be to the benefit of both Mateta and Edouard if they got to play up top together. The question is, would it be to the benefit of the team?

Even if you include the big teams, very few teams play with two out-and-out forwards in a 442 in the premier league (maybe none at all?), so it's not like Roy is unique in any way in preferring to play with one forward. Plainly, most top coaches believe they are better off with the extra midfielder. Even if we had two good strikers, playing them both would be a risk almost nobody else takes.

In our case, we would be using two forwards in the hope that by playing both of them we might compensate for the poor quality and weaknesses of both. Neither is good enough on their own, so by playing both we might actually carry the threat that one good forward carries.

It would be almost like playing with ten men, except we would have 11 on the field.
