Football teams are all about players. A good manager might add a little something, but in the main, the most you can ask for is to avoid appointing a bad one who reduces the natural level of the players.

We struggle when Eze and Olise are not fit, which is quite often this season. We miss Zaha. of course. The players who take their places are not as good (not even remotely usually) and that's our problem in a nutshell.

We are not Man City, and will never have five or six top-class attacking players from which to pick two or three. We need our key players fit and in form to do well, otherwise it's all a bit of a grind. The key is not to dream of what could be if only we had a bench full of top internationals, but instead to devise a plan to get the required points when our key players are missing. That is what Roy does. When the best players are back and fit, that same plan looks very different, of course.

No new manager will change any of that, so why change the manager? We've tried all sorts over the years now and never found anyone better than Roy.

Fair point. I'm not sure Roy would actually want to go on beyond the end of this season but if he doesn't common sense tells you we need another pragmatist. Preferrably with a decent level of experience.
We'd all love to see passing attacking football but as Roy has repeatedly said before, you have to form a strategy based on what you have to work with.

Chris Hughton fits the bill.Experienced manager (Over 500 games), PL experience !
Likes his team to be compact, admits himself he is not the most expansive of coaches.
NOT that I am suggesting in any way that I would be popping a Champagne cork if he was appointed !!

I pretty much think we have to buy or at least loan, one player, preferably two, in January. We seem threadbare unless somehow the youngsters miraculously impress - which seems increasingly unlikely with tough matches ahead. One rare long shot would be that we have another injury and have to play Franca - and he's suddenly brilliant. Dreaming, I know.

I agree with this, still very annoying when we put in poor performances against the likes of Luton. I wonder if Roy had any input into the deals for Henderson and Franca which so far have been a waste of money when we needed a striker

I understand the sentiments of Lanzo's original post and accept generally January is not a good time to do business as it is often a period of panic buying that results in clubs paying over the odds for players but this window might be different. The teams that have come up are not rolling in money and i can't see Burnley Luton and Sheffield United breaking the bank to try and survive. I think their models are around lets try and stay up but if not keep the players we have and get promoted again the following season and give it a better go second time around.
The second factor is that at the end of the August window we were apparently close to bringing in 2 other players ( 1 i am sure was Lewis Hall ) only for the deals to full through at the last minute. This would indicate we were still trying to stengthen the squad and had funds to do so. I agree there is no need to panic buy but if there was a suitable full back or striker up for sale we would try and take advantage of a situation that might present itself.

You can tell a lot about the strength of a clubs playing staff by the quality they have on the bench on match day, the top clubs have more money sitting on the bench than we have been able to spend on the entire first team.

When Eze and Olise have been out we amassed 4 points. A turgid performance and a lucky point at home to Forest and a somewhat fortuitous win against a Burnley side who have lost all of their games at home this season. I'm starting to wonder if Roy's steadfast approach is starting to get old hat.

To say managers don't make a difference is odd. I agree you can't turn a crap squad into prime Barcelona by changing the manager, but you only have to look at Villa and Brighton as two obvious examples where a new manager with fresh ideas have taken squads to another level. I think a manager who would bring more intensity to our play would be good, similar to what O'Neill has done at Wolves. Attack with intent and less slow passing around sideways and backwards.

I understand where TBTP is coming from but I very much agree with this. That's not to say I think I am correct of course, just mirrors my thoughts.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Some dire results in December taking us into or close to the relegation zone coupled with significant injuries and the club will be forced to bolster the squad in the January window.

Aside from the need to buy/loan a new defensive midfielder to replace Doucoure, my one wish for January would be to add some genuine pace to the attack.
I’m talking about players who frighten opposition defences knowing they have no chance of catching them in a foot race.
It would make such a difference to our stumbling, lumbering attack.

In conversation with a supporter at the weekend he kept using the word "Moribund" to describe our current situation and positivity was in short supply.
