I also think Mateta deserves a start on Sunday otherwise you disincentive players on the fringes. However.. get him heading the ball more in practice and running to the back post in anticipation of crosses. He tends to get lost in the box. I’m not sure he’s got great game awareness including the ability to second guess where ball is going to land but you can’t really teach that. Hence get him running to back post in training where he has a better chance especially with his height and Wards overhit crosses. His ability to strike the ball well in open play is undisputed. A centre forward playing in the best league in the world that struggles with the basics of the game is not ideal, although we’ve bought a few like that in the past and probably will in the future so we might as well get used to it.

Unfortunately for Mateta heading is still allowed. And he doesn't do heading from what I have seen.

Completely agree. I've always thought that (when watching JMP in real life) he like to shoot early, little flicked finishes etc. Which just isn't inline with our pedestrian build up. Also not slagging off Olise, but a right footer on the right would be useful. Ayew cross to Edouard last night was almost a carbon copy of the Sheffield goal. Those crosses are soo hard to defend against And it was a great finish Edited by dreamwaverider (31 Aug 2023 10.52am)

A hat trick against Plymouth reserves seems to have convinced us we don’t need another forward and can invest the money we have more wisely in somewhere we desperately need cover…another goalkeeper !

Jean-Philippe Mateta seems to be a player that needs through balls to play to his strengths and generally this has not been how Palace play. Against Plymouth two goal were through balls and he indicated where he wanted the ball played. The goals he scored in Germany were mainly through ball or chasing big balls out of defence. There is a good striker in there, I hope Palace can get the best out of him.
