i heard that the original books were very gritty and raw. But the tv show gave it a makeover and all nice with apple pie.

i found this on t'internet

What is the origin of the word sheriff?

The modern word “Sheriff”, which means keeper or chief of the County, is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words “Shire-Reeve”. The Shire-Reeve, in the days of King Alfred the Great of England, in 871, was responsible for collecting taxes and enforcing the Kings Orders.

I read at least 2 of the books when I was a kid they are really aimed at children I wouldn't call them gritty but they were certainly not fluffy like the TV show.

Cities that burst into existence overnight, and often, were abandoned just as quickly.

what other fact-based programmes ( or YouTube) can you recommend for that Era ?

The Golden gate bridge in San Francisco got its name not because of its colour but it was the gateway to prospectors coming over it to sell their gold

Hardly surprising since it's a rusty red.

It's not really that impressive, but San Francisco Bay is. It also has other more impressive bridges.

Gunsmoke was on for years - mainly Chester hobbling along "Marshall Dillon! Marshall Dillon!", and Miss Kitty displaying her heart of gold.
Similarly The Virginian ran forever without anything much happening.
My favourite was F-Troop. Ken Berry as Captain Parmenter falling over all the time was highly amusing to a small person.

From my youth I think Casey Jones played back to back with Champion the Wonder Horse on morning TV in the holidays.

Casey Jones a steamin’ and a rollin’,
Casey Jones you never have to guess
When you hear the tootin’ of the whistle
It’s Casey at the throttle of the Cannonball Express.
