Hope this is not true! Wilf 5 years ago, this offer would have made sense, but not now. Add that he will have a say in choosing the manager as well as demanding more "ambitious" signings.

Economics tbh. £10M is a lot of money but if you take into account that he was reportedly on £150k per week then the pot is really for £2.5m. I think that Wilf 4 years back would be no question but now even though Wilf is still in good nick maybe not.
Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course). |

The maths says that the club is thinking short term to preserve money to be spent elsewhere in the next 2 years (either other transfers or stadium upgrade): Wilf on a 2 year deal at £200k/week - £20m. A replacement on £100k/week - £10m transfer fee available. Realistically, very few available who'd be good enough. In terms of having money available to buy other players in the next 2/3 transfer windows, offering Zaha that deal is very likely the cheapest option available to us. The only way to go cheaper is sign someone else on a free (Nelson, Brereton Diaz), or kick the can down the road with a loan (one of the Chelsea lot). Long term, it's cheaper to buy an Eze type for £20m, pay them £50k/week and then there's sell on value, but over the next 2 years that's £5m more expensive than offering Zaha the 2 year deal.

Wilf’s future value is not great as he is definitely more of a depreciating asset these days and I would much prefer the Eze type approach. This is down to Dougie to find the right player as that is what he’s paid for and they are definitely out there. We could have bought Watkins but we didn’t, same with Toney.

I think you have to take account of the other money which will become available, Luka, Tomkins, McArthur, Clyne, Ward and Butland is a saving of about 280k a week, add Wilf on top and it is over 400k, probably a unique situation to exploit, if handled correctly, and that is the big if

IMO we will keep one or possibly even both of Ward and Clyne. Even if we get a new RB Ward could be retained as cover at CB. I'm expecting Butland, Tomkins and McArthur to be released and possibly one of the above two RBs. I do expect Wilf to go as it is quite simply his last chance to play for a bigger club even if only from the bench or in occasional European game. Only my opinion, of course, based on a view of expected limited transfer funds. Edited by doombear (27 Apr 2023 4.06pm)

However, if we have to replace the majority of the bench, then every pound we can save on not bringing in a Wilf replacement right now could be attractive. - Butland and Matthews go - we need to seriously think about whether we need to bring in a no.3. We probably do. I think we probably need to buy a GK (cheap), CB (cheap-ish), RB, CM on top of a Wilf replacement. I think his powers are waning and objectively Wilf isn't worth £200k/week, but I can see why the club wouldn't want to buy a £20m winger this window.

My theory is that the club have ( reportedly ) made a £200k per week offer in the certain knowledge that it will be turned down. Then, Wilf goes to find his fortune elsewhere and the club can say that they made him a great offer which he chose to decline. Yes, I'm that cynical.

I agree, Nelson may be a decent buy, maybe Spence from Spurs, Loan, with obligation, Whitworth for 3rd keeper, i rate Hughes and lets hope Almahada is decent, Richards should cover a few positions, Jairo is still under contract, Rak-Sakyi maybe, and for me a Striker is priority, hopefully we can offload Edouard even on loan.

Thin line between that and being 'realistic' when it comes to supporting Palace!
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

i would be happy to start next season with: Johnstone or Guaita Squad, Whitworth, Ward, Richards, Jairo, Almahada, Hughes, Phillips, Nelson, Rak-Sakyi, Mateta, although the more the merrier
