so what your Saying is as the intention of the passer is to pass to the offside player, it should be ruled Offside, regardless of the 'active' Status of the receiving player?

Essentially yes.

I don't think defenders should be accountable for calling an offside (within reason). In a perfect world the linesman's flag would go up immediately and everybody would know that it is an offside. Plus, that would be given as a FK long before the defender would even touch the ball would it not?

Law 11 :

A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent.

Precisely. It's nonsense in the situation I described.

I agree with you entirely, however the flag going up or not going up is irrelevant ie in a slightly less perfect world VAR should rule it offside in any event.

Currently of course as Law 11 stands a player is not offside for merely being in an offside position.
If one wants a situation whereby a player to be deemed offside irrespective of where he is on the field of play that is a different debate.

That doesn't make any sense whatsoever unless I am missing something.

It's a debate worth having. It would prevent situations like that with Rashford the other week.

Automated (or semi-automated as they like to call it) offsides will be in for next season. This will massively reduce the chance of time taken and errors made. Things like the Rashford goal (interfering or not?) will still be left to officials to make the final decision though, so there will still be room to bleat.

People carp on about VAR and 'can't we go back to refs making the decisions' but ultimately it was brought in to do one job, and that was to significantly reduce the amount of serious mistakes in the game. It's done that. If you want to bin it off you're saying I want there to be more critical mistakes made in games. I want more teams to lose out to goals that should/should not have stood, players sent off when they shouldn't have been etc. All for the sake of some romantic ideal. Madness.

If there was only a marginal difference in errors I'd reconsider my opinion but it's significant, in some cases from 82% > 95%, which at elite level is massive.

Automate offsides and the main issue of time taken to make decisions also reduces drastically... it will get there.

What you can't do is completely eliminate human error, but you can continue to reduce the chance of it happening. The system will become better and better over time.

In the Rashford incident, the Law, as it stands, was correctly applied.

I totally agree that in football as in life one simply cannot eliminate human errors, perfection is not in the human gift.

That's up for debate, and rightly so. That incident came down to someones interpretation of the law... there's certainly a case to say that shadowing the ball is affecting the decision making and therefore behaviour of the defenders around you, therefore interfering and therefore offside.

I could be wrong but I don't think the law states a player has to have touched the ball to be interfering – eg. blocking a keepers line of sight is classed as interfering. It comes down to the application of the law and who is applying it and is more subjective than other more black and white laws

Essentially, both decisions could potentially be correct in that scenario.

Why not do away with the players and have all matches on PlayStation? Cheaper, more comfortable and no travel involved.
