Ive just read the Athletic article and it seems PV sacked him. He didn't like the way he dealt with the players after the Everton smashing and apparently thats not the only time. The hairdryer treatment doesn't work anymore for modern players. I believe he wanted Sean as coach because he knew the players and club so well. Now that PV has been at the club a year himself he doesn't need him for that anymore? Perhaps can take a more active coaching role himself now?

So PV has the authority over the board to sack someone? Sounds dubious. More likely he had words with Derry and then they took it to the board and when the irreconcilable differences couldn't be sorted out Derry walked / had to go.

I am not suggesting that CPFC provide the exact reason for Derry's departure but to not even mention that he had departed, followed by a recognition of his services and 'Best Wishes' for the future, is disappointing. Derry ploughed his furrow for 6 years over 2 spells, he made 226 appearances and was give the captain's armband. He then served the club as a coach and more recently as 1st team coach.

Clearly PV was unhappy to find him shouting at players after the Everton game 4 months ago. He must have spoken to him about it back then. The fact he’s gone now suggests he didn’t listen, can’t help himself, or disagreed with Vierra’s more measured style and told him so. I’m sure I read somewhere that PV for the first time in his managerial career tore into his players at Nice following a poor performance after which the lost 5 on the bounce and he got sacked. He’s the boss and his team need to follow his lead or move on.

I think every Palace fan had fondness for Derry - another one being McCarthy.

Not really. The Ferguson approach worked for some players and not for others, but he was smart and powerful enough to build a squad of players who responded to his hair-dryer method. In contrast, Wenger did exactly the same thing and was successful with the opposite method - not "soft" but calm and measured. There isn't one, fixed "best" management style; different players are motivated by different bosses and good managers find the right players for their approach. Vieira, unsurprisingly given that his mentors are Wenger and Guardiola, is not a disciple of throwing things around the dressing room. That hardly makes him "soft". The caveman-only era is, thankfully, over. An awful lot of contradictions in that paragraph. The hard approach works but it doesn’t, different players react to different approaches. You are missing the whole point that Ferguson was so good because he used to know when to be hard nosed and when to put an arm around someone. Long live the cave man as you like to call it because some of these players who cause dressing room unrest need to be properly managed. Do you think Ronaldo would have been able to cause so much disruption in a Ferguson dressing room? Look at Dych. He’s gone straight into his new job and banned snoods and hats from training and tried to install some discipline and urgency to training sessions. I stick by my opinion that there are too many soft managers around who get easily influenced by senior players.

I agree with viera, he's the manager, they're his staff, you do as you're told or go. In any other job in the world that would be the same case. Forget all this derry is palace through and through,he's a professional who played for us because he was paid to, the same as coaching, yeah im sure he has an affinity to us but if he got a better deal elsewhere, im sure he would take it.

PV may be the manager but as soon as a better opportunity comes by he'll be off....Derry's paid his dues at the club through some of its hardest times. Team Derry on this one......The club owned him more sensitivity and respect on his departure than this. Edited by Stirlingsays (04 Feb 2023 11.06am)
