Not sure what is happening behind the scenes, but the team sometimes do not seem 'fired up' for some of the games. PV and Wilf keep talking about being more ruthless, but we never seem to see that in practise.

As listed in previous posts we do have a number of free agents So I think Parish is nervous to buy now as he knows the Budget for spend come summer is very considerable & wants PV to blood a couple of Academy now to cover injuries plus two lemons Yet PV is up against it as Palace recruitment is out performed by others.

How do you know his hands are tied, the recruitment has been brilliant over the last 18 months, but unfortunately it is not showing on the pitch, Freedman is doing the recruiting anyway, how do you know Roy wouldn't have wanted them, PV is doing an OK job, nothing more. Because PV has pointed out what and where the team needs strengthening but it doesn’t look like we will be buying big this window (well, big for us!!) to meet his wishes. A ball playing centre half, let alone two, isn't/wasn’t Roy type of game. Any midfield player with creativity (Max Mayer and Victor Camarasa spring to mind) isn't/wasn’t Roy type of game. I trusting that Parish, Freedman and Vieira will turn around the squad of players needed to carry out a new playing style but it’s going to take more than 3 transfer windows!! This summer, with Wilf likely to leave and players out of contract, is going to big for us. Can we go again?

So my estimates ; Butland - £1-2m When a player departs, what you're really looking at isn't incoming transfer fee but the salary money you take off your books/operating budget. What would be more interesting to know is the exact amount of cash freed up weekly by the list above. My guess is that Wilf, if he leaves, would be able to replaced by at least two well-remunerated players given what he's earning. I'd guess Luka (who signed his contract in his prime) is earning a decent sum too and will be easy to replace with someone far more productive for the same or even less money. Ditto Macca who is also likely well-paid, but at this stage we're not really getting much value for the outlay. Bottom line is that cumulatively, the above are probably collectively earning around £400-£500k a week. Forget transfer fees which, anyway, are amortized over the length of the contract. That frees up a lot of budget to reinvest.

In fairness to Hodgson on those two, neither of them has done anything of note after us. Max Meyer is currently having a decent season in the Swiss League. Camarasa hasn't played a club game for over a year (and hasn't been injured). Looking at the free agent list, Aouar, Moussa Dembele, Brereton Diaz, Ryan Kent, Ellyes Skhiri (27 year old defensive mid - most ground covered in the Bundesliga) stand out. There's some decent options in positions we need.

Regardless of the transfer budget, I think we SHOULD be blooding youngsters. If we don't, what's the point of a world-class academy? I'm not saying count on them; but to me using Ozoh for a few minutes last weekend made far more sense than using Jairo yet again. Ozoh might be the future. Jairo definitely is not. PV shouldn't need to be told to do that. As for our recruitment, I'd argue that we're not regularly out-performed by others. What we are is out-budgeted (which is different0, but the players we do manage to bring in on our limited budget have a reasonable hit-rate in the past couple of years compared to the signings of many other teams. Our recruitment itself doesn't need to get better. We just need more to spend on it.

It's painful to think that we're probably paying Macca, Luka, Butland, Tomkins, and Ferguson the better part of £350k a week collectively this season to play a total of maybe ten matches between them all season. Next year, that money should be funding at least five decent new players at £75k a week each who are actually contributing on the pitch. Sweeping out the deadwood alone will make a massive difference as we will be putting the cash we are wasting now to good use. Edited by sydtheeagle (24 Jan 2023 9.13pm)

It's possible that Ward could be offered another year but it's hard to see where the rest could be justified in retaining. Bar Ferguson, none are the right side of 30. a They cost no where near £60m, maybe £30m nearer the mark.

Stats can be a bit misleading. I think we have had only 2 'fully deserved' wins this season - Villa in August and Bournemouth recently. The other 4 wins - Leeds, Wolves, Saints and West Ham could easily have been drawn. I can think of very few games we have lost or drawn where we deserved more, maybe the odd point here or there. To me it is clear we are a lesser team than last season, regardless of points. We are struggling to create chances and impose ourselves on games. Whilst there are mitigating circumstances to deny there is a problem is foolhardy Good observations about how we are going this season and why we need to be concerned especially given how tight the relegation battle is and that the teams below us are adding to their player base.
