by far the best goalkeeper we have ever had RIP John " Stonewall " Jackson I was going to say to those who can remember him how good was he compared to other Palace goalkeepers?? Obviously I know he was a legend and extremely highly rated but I'm not old enough to of ever seen him play... For me personally Nigel Martyn was the best goalkeeper I've seen at Palace... For those that were lucky enough to see both Jackson and Nigel was he better than Martyn do you think??
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

I've old enough and lucky enough to have seen John Jackson, Nigel Martyn and Julian Speroni. So difficult to choose who was best - different eras, different styles.

When you think about Palace Keepers he immediately springs to mind, such a wonderful player, very sad news.

As much as I really rated the ‘Big Cornishman’, and he went on to play for England which Jacko didn’t, I will always say that Jacko has been our best keeper since I started watching Palace in 1967. RIP
55 years on the Palace rollercoaster! |

I first went to Selhurst as a boy of eight in 1948 so I am in a good position to rate the merits of the many excellent keepers since then. Vic Rouse was first and capped by Wales. Bill Glazier was a young acrobatic keeper and then along came the best and bravest of them all, John Jackson. You have to bear in mind the state of the sodden pitches in his era and also the leather ball which became leaden in the rain, and above all, the lack of protection against often lethal No.9's. You had to be fearless in these situations and Jacko was supreme. Keepers from the 80's on have it made: a light ball, pristine surfaces and refs who did not permit an aerial challenge on keepers. I doubt if the Martyns, Millingtons, Speronis would have coped. If the club does not mark his passing in some meaningful way it will be a disgrace to his memory.
Man and boy Palace since my first game in 1948 sitting on my dad's shoulders |

Deserves a Pride of Britain award at the least.

I was disgusted to find that there was no mention of the great late John Jackson in last night’s Spurs programme. What an insult to a player who gave so much to the club in his 393 appearances yet he wasn’t deemed worthy of a tribute in the programme!!. So sad!.

Had the programme already gone to press before the sad news broke?
