Journalists as a group will tend to have more liberal views than the average user here. They are though professionals. The BBC has set ways of ensuring objectivity and neutrality. Humans fall sometimes but the BBC as a whole doesn’t. It’s the most trustworthy source of information on the planet.

Are you on drugs ?

Joining this late in the day, my position is I think the BBC is way better value than Netflix for example. I regularly use the BBC website, R4, R5, BBC Local Radio, BBC2, BBC4 and the Iplayer.

Yes BBC telly is full of repeats and perhaps there are economies that could be made. However I think overall it's fantastic value and remains the envy of much of the world. Best of all it is politically independent. Which upsets the party in power no matter what the colour. No bad thing.

And yet you ignore the obvious complaint against it.

I don't care about value for money although I would disagree with your assessment. I simply don't want to be forced to pay for a channel I don't watch, I also don't watch ITV or C4 but I don't care as it costs me nothing.

Young people are increasingly not watching mainstream TV so the demographics mean that the BBC is losing audience year after year.

If the BBC is so wonderful so good value for money and so popular why do they need to force people to pay for it with the threat of criminal prosecution if they don't.

Scrap the compulsion and I will shut up about the BBC.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, the point is that's what is is.

The fact is the current head of the BBC has recognised the political bias and stated it will change, remains to be seen.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

I take a daily statin.

Based on the stuff you routinely post I suspect you to be on something much stronger. Possibly the kind that induce an altered reality.

It's quite obvious the BBC has floated to the left for some time now. For me, it has been somewhat, somewhat agitating to witness however I often feel the vitriol is a bit OTT.

I put it down to current zeitgeists, you know the 'victim' and deluded empowerment of failures culture that currently screams loudest. The younger generation are particularly guilty of either subscribing to or, and more often than not the case IMO, abusing this for their own personal gain: 'don't pay attention to my incompetence or lack of potential, look at my support for 'x current thing' etc.'. It's almost inevitable that this would therefore play out in media with the BBC an obvious example.

I still use it for both my sporting and all other news to be honest and whilst on the odd occasion I might murmur and b!tch to myself it hardly occupies a lot of my mind. I can filter out that which irks me quite easily.

It's good to see there is some awareness if not acknowledgement of this and I would be gutted if it were to fall, as I would if it were to swing too far to the right, and sincerely hope it reclaims it's position as it was previously.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Firstly, it’s good to read that you acknowledge I am entitled to an opinion, which is a welcome change to your diet of ad hominems.

Secondly, the current Chairman of the BBC has not “recognised”that it has any “political bias”. That’s just tabloid headline spin. Richard Sharp is a political appointee designed to placate the Mail reading Tory heartland. He has no media experience at all, is an ex investment banker who said in an interview that he believes in the BBC and the licence fee and then, without any evidence, made an off the cuff comment about some presenters having a liberal bias. Just another opinion! I expect some do have just as some don’t. How long will he be there? Will anything change? I very much doubt it and certainly hope not. All this does is to allow the Mail to make money by winding up the blue rinse brigade.

It reads as though you don’t understand what the TV license actually covers!

You need one to watch ANY live TV on any device, to record live TV and use iPlayer in any way. You don’t need it to watch on demand streaming, such as Netflix.

So not watching the BBC doesn’t free you of the need for a licence. Where the money raised goes is a political decision. Funding our national broadcaster in this way makes perfect sense to me.

The answer is obvious. We both know that if the BBC was voluntary subscription only it would be the end of the BBC. It'd never raise enough to fund itself. So well done, we agree that the BBC cannot expect to prosper in the free market in fact it'd probably die.

If that were to happen we'd be left with Sky, BT, Amazon and the all the other minor players. Is that what you'd like?

I think the BBC is more than just a TV provider. It's an institution and one worth preserving IMO.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

There is also the issue of quality. The BBC aren't relying on ratings for their income so can put out a load of old toot. Like they did over Christmas.

Other opinions are available.

I always prefer BBC output to other channels precisely because it isn’t “old toot”., even when it’s repeats.

I am glad they don’t have to chase ratings, so can concentrate on providing quality. Their job, like our MPs, is not to give us what we want, but to identify what we need and then convince us to watch it. Commercial broadcasters can provide the popular dross. The BBC is our public service broadcaster and our most potent sales tool in an ever shrinking world.

So everyone needs to be very careful about what you wish for. Brexit was bad enough. Dumping on the BBC is crazy.

BBC quiz-based comedy programmes. Like a form of torture.

I bet people in dodgy countries are tied into a chair and forced to watch that unfunny crap ?

If their Christmas night offering of Call the Midwife, EastEnders, Mrs. Brown's Boys and a repeat of the Vicar of Dibley was high quality then I stand corrected.
