My preference for Palace would be for two holding midfielders to give the team better balance, win the ball in key areas and allow us a platform for our attacking players to flourish.
I note there is a tendency though for the better teams to play with one midfielder sitting deep.
For Man City that’s Rodri (and before him Fernandinho) for Liverpool it’s usually Fabhino and for Arsenal it’s Partey.
However, these teams have better players than us and are more equipped to dominate possession and create and take chances.
Vieira’s aspirations are admirable, but there’s a danger it will not produce football which creates many chances (as the stats indicate) or leads to winning as many matches as we need to breathe more easily.
It will be interesting to see his team selections moving forward.
Part of me wonders if he plays the ‘one number 6 and two 8s ‘ in midfield because he’s wedded to the idea or because he just doesn’t rate the alternatives in Luka, Hughes and Jairo.

PV wants a Man City clone, but we dont have the players, KD & Jedinak DMs, Enabling then Wilf, Moritz and Bolasie freedom behind Murray

I had a further think about this, and came up with a simple question:
What is the difference between this season and last?
Teams around us reinforcing? Possibly.
Refs and VAR? Pretty much the same ineptitude as ever.
PV trying to play the same game but without the players he had last season and inadequate replacement levels? Ah got it.
Between him and the board the realisation must come that the playing style they want to achieve cannot be done on a shoestring and with a lacklustre bang average squad.

The loss of Gallagher,McArthur and Kouyate from the midfield has been a significant factor, however we are 3 pts better off than at the same juncture last season.

Prior to the Nottm For debacle we had won 4 of our previous 6 PL games but 2 defeats on the back of abject performances have caused much consternation and alarm.

It is one of those strange quirks that we are matching last season's points tally thus far, yet having been fortunate in a number of games and not looked particularly convincing overall. One can only hope that the recent two abject performances are not a sign of things to come and are a wake up call.

Have to wonder if PV is aiming to convince the FA that his team needs to be refreshed. There are rules about playing below strenght teams. Has he cleared the decks to allow him to give six or more Academy players PL starts?

Although the midfield weaknesses are there for all to see our dependence on the two first choice centre backs and lack of recruitment of a target man (even one that doesn't score) is as much a concern as there is so little tactical alternative.

I can remember all the discussion around formations / use of Eze etc under the previous manager but the changes seemed to make little difference because of the overall limitations of the players. Remember Eze and Olise in particular have lost any element of surprise. Olise is horribly one footed.

Gallagher was so good for us he was always going to be impossible to replace.

History and age dictate that McArthur was going to be available less often than more.

We've punched well above our weight up to this point IMO.

The points about leadership and grit are very fair and I don't see a Dyche type fancying our squad at all if things go the wrong way.

Is Vieira too nice? Well-liked by everybody and going to the Arsenal(?) Christmas party!! The players think they are stars playing on the same stage as DeBruyne and Salah. Seeing them on Palace TV cooking food for the boss in Turkey, two players appear in a PL promotion film as Santa Claus.
We are Crystal Palace, the underdog team that fight for every cm on the pitch, who gives the fans belief and joy and excitement. Yesterday we played like a pub team (no offence) and the ref was at same level, but we would probably have lost even if Fulham had two players sent off.
One last question> How could the manager send out the same players for 2nd half after that performance?

Just feel that Vieira has achieved as much as he can with Palace and that he knows that.
He's made some strange tactical calls. From where I was sitting in the Arthur Wait, the Brentford game was there for the taking after Zaha scored. What does the manager do? Goes defensive and tries to sit on the one goal lead. As it was, Brentford almost won it.
This isn't a moan. To be in the top half of the Premier League is, in the age of megabuck spending, more than a club the size of Palace can hope for. It would be great to win the F.A. Cup one day. Yet Chris Sutton has a point when he says that when you look at the Palace squad, they should achieve more...

I think that's a very good post.

It does start to have the feeling of 'if we want to take the next step', which whilst seeming ungrateful and spoilt is natural for any football club, you feel it would have to be someone other than Vieira. It also feels, just for me, that the only way from here on in is downwards, that we've peaked before a decline.

I say 'feels' and 'for me' as it is just a subjective opinion from a simpleton such as myself, and one borne from a perpetual state of footballing anxiety. I think, as with any club, it all massively depends on further investment too, which is out of PV's hands.

We made some good signings, and have spent a lot of money, however that was to rejuvenate an ageing and struggling squad, which is barely 1/3 achieved. Without further investment, and PV not having answers to more immediate concerns, the perpetual and personal anxiety I feel may actually transition into real cause for panic.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

This is the question. We’ve seen games recently where the manager has seen things aren’t going to plan in the first half and has made some very early changes. Why wouldn’t you with five subs available? For some reason Vieira doesn’t see it like that and that’s something that needs to change.
